After being declared a global pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO), China, Italy, India and 16 other countries have ordered a total lockdown which prohibits entry or exit of individuals. However, General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C), Bharrat Jagdeo, is not in favour of total isolation of Guyana.

PPP/C General Secretary, Bharrat Jagdeo

During a press briefing yesterday at the PPP/C’s Freedom House office, Robb Street, Georgetown Jagdeo was keen to highlight the economic impact if a lockdown did happen in Guyana. He emphasized that it would be difficult for families and by extension the country, to thrive if such a lockdown was implemented.
Nonetheless, Jagdeo emphasized during his appeal, for Guyanese to practice social distancing which would limit the spread of the Coronavirus.
As it continues to spread at an alarming rate—with over 400,000 confirmed cases globally and over 18,000 deaths, the WHO has appealed to countries to practice “self- isolation” and “social distancing” to ward off, help stop or slow down the spread of disease. This practice, according to the WHO, would allow the healthcare system to more readily care for patients over time.
“Most people by now would have seen the advisories which recommend people to avoid gathering in large numbers (and) for them to stay away from work. I know people feel trapped in their homes and all of that, but they have to consider the consequences of the transmission of the disease,” he said yesterday.
Jagdeo added that, “I have heard reports of gatherings in clubs and other public settings. That is not an environment that is conducive to limiting the spread of the virus. People should observe social distancing; this is crucial for the country,” he asserted during the press briefing.

Misleading heading. I listened to Jagdeo's remarks yesterday and commented immediately that he was more concerned about the effects of the pandemic that anything Granger has shown so far and that Granger was using the virus as a suppression mechanism. I lost count of the number of times Jagdeo emphasized that people should take this virus seriously and follow the health officials guidelines.

Even reading the contents above does not give credence to the heading of the article.

All of Django's headings are misleading.

That does not mean that he is not in favor of a lockdown. I too am concerned by the effects of our lockdown because it is affecting many economically (3.2M Americans already filed for unemployment last week and that was before all the more strict stay at home orders went into effect) but it is not the only threat resulting from this pandemic and Jagdeo comments did not claim that it was. He has been more detailed about large gatherings than Granger has with Granger only using it as a suppression mechanism.

There many articles in Kaieteur news... why you chose to post one with a misleading heading then? You as a “neutral“ individual should say that but you didn’t.

Send your objection of the heading to Kaiteur News.

Some countries needs to lock down, before the virus takes a foothold and start killing people by the dozens. Guyana markets are vulnerable places.

Why you people criticizing Django when the heading and report  are from KN ?

I dont see how Guyana can do a total lock down when people go out shopping for food on a daily basis. In China, during total lock down, food and medicine was delivered directly to the citizens.

I see crooks like Modi and Granger using the lock down to suppress the already vulnerable.

The predicament in India, the north part is more vulnerable than the south but traffic is high. Furthermore, their villages are densely packed.

If 25C kills the virus, why is it still alive in some Caribbean islands ?

There is no strong evidence that anything kills it at the moment, but all we should do is prevent it spreading.  If a person got it and their immune system [with existing conditions] cant get rid of it, they die.

There are no conclusive proof/evidence that the current Coronavirus will be destroyed as temperature rises, especially in the colder countries that will be primarily in the summer months.

Currently, there are rudimentary hypothesis on what if this, that and the other on the specific issue for temperature -vs- Coronavirus.
