The PPP/C in Bartica:

The PPP/C on the move

Among the several noticeable new faces yesterday in the PPP/C contingent were Dr. Vindhya Persaud, Bishop Juan Edghill, Peter Ramsaroop, Emmanuel Cummings and Phillip Bynoe.

Ramotar, speaking with reporters at City Hall, said he believed that his party has β€œa very good list”, one that is reflective of the entire country, comprising persons from a variety of backgrounds and ethnic and religious persuasions. Ramotar also exuded tremendous confidence yesterday about a PPP/C victory at the polls, as he alluded to the kind of support the PPP/C has been receiving throughout the length and breadth of Guyana.

Meanwhile, President Jagdeo has made it clear that his name was not among those on the list of candidates for the PPP/C.

β€œMy name is not on the list because I will not be serving in Parliament. I don’t plan to get back into Parliament and I don’t want to take a space on the list. I can help the Government through other capacities. But the sole purpose of your name on the list is to get into Parliament,” he told reporters.

The President said that there has been no promise to anyone as an inducement to get their support. β€œNo one has been promised Minister or Advisor positions. You are there on the list simply because you want to associate yourself with the PPP, unlike other parties,” President Jagdeo said.

APNU in the mood

Speaking to reporters after presenting his party’s list of candidates, Presidential Candidate of APNU David Granger said people are concerned about security. β€œThis is what people want to [hear] and the Government, which is supposed to be responsible for security, ignores them,” he said.

Granger stated that his political movement knows the problems facing security and education and they have been addressing them. β€œThey want jobs for their children, they want security and they want a good education system,” he said.

Speaking about APNU having the best economic team of the elections, Granger stated that Carl Greenidge is a part of that team and said he was instrumental in crafting the economic aspects of the party’s manifesto, which is yet to be released to the public.

Some of the prominent members of the discarded PNC, now APNU, present yesterday were Robert Corbin, Basil Williams and Oscar Clarke. APNU’s prime ministerial candidate Dr. Rupert Roopnarine, formerly from the now defunct WPA, was also present. Another noticeable face in the contingent was former

Rooting for the AFC

Also making a grand entrance, a few minutes late, presumably for effect, was TUF exile Valeria Garrido-Lowe, who recently announced that she was throwing her support to the AFC after a falling out with the TUF over who was in charge of that party.

Speaking to members of the media, former PPP stalwart Moses Nagamootoo, now on the AFC’s campaign trail, said he has made a stride to leap into the future of Guyana, and he wanted to know if others would be able to do the same. He said too that the move to the AFC was relatively an easy decision to make, compared to leaving the PPP, which he said was a tough decision.

Garrido-Lowe, now campaigning on the AFC gravy train, confirmed that she is on the AFC’s list of candidates. β€œMr. Nadir is a PPP first of all. He has no right to try to take TUF from its people. He has no right,” she said. She believes that she has the pull factor to capture many Amerindian votes towards the AFC. β€œIn the hearts of the people [Nadir] hasn’t taken my place,” she said.

PPP leads in latest NACTA Opinion Poll

Monday, 31 October 2011 02:24

Ramotar most likely next president

A tracking opinion poll conducted by the North American Caribbean Teachers Association last week to determine popular support for the political parties on Guyana’s general elections showed the incumbent PPP/C leading the opposition parties and Donald Ramotar is most likely to be elected the next President of Guyana, with the other parties trailing way behind.
The polling exercise was concluded before the parties filed nominations and before several major developments relating to the political moves of former PPP stalwart Moses Nagamootoo, Dr. Joey Jagan, Peter Ramsaroop, C.N Sharma, Valerie Lowe, etc., from one party to another.
NACTA, founded in New York by Caribbean educators, has no affiliation with any political party. It has been conducting opinion surveys regularly in Guyana, the Caribbean, and other regions for 20 years. The latest Guyana poll was conducted to determine how people plan to vote for the November 28 elections, approval rating for outgoing President Bharrat Jagdeo, and how people rate the performance of the ministers and the achievement of the ministries during the term of the administration.
The poll randomly interviewed 500 voters to yield a demographically representative sample (45% Indians, 30% Africans, 16% Mixed, 8% Amerindians, and 1% other races) of the voting population. The survey was done in field interviews and was coordinated by Vishnu Bisram, a pollster, newspaper columnist, and an educator in NY, and who has been conducting polls in Guyana since 1989. The results of last week’s poll were analyzed at a 95% significance level and a statistical sampling error of plus or minus five percentage points was found. Sampling results based on subgroups (such as Indians, Africans, Mixed, Amerindians) have a larger sampling error.
Asked if they approve of Jagdeo’s performance as President, 69% answered in the affirmative, with 24% saying no and 7% not offering a response.
Asked if they approve of incumbent Sam Hinds as the Prime Ministerial candidate of the PPP/C, 56% said yes, with 34% saying no, and 10% offering no response.
Asked which Ministry has made the most progress in terms of performance during the five years term of the government, Agriculture leads with 20% followed by Housing with 18%, Social Welfare 12%, Health 11%, Finance 8%, Culture 7%, Others 5%, Not Sure 19%.
Asked who they would rate as the best performing Minister, Robert Persaud leads with 21% followed by Priya Manikchand (14%), Irfan Ali 13%, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy (12%), Dr. Ashni Singh (10%), Frank Anthony (7%), Others (8%), Not Sure 15%.
In terms of popular support, the PPP is polling 48%, followed by APNU 25%, AFC 8%, JFAP 1%, other parties less than 1%, and 17% undecided or no response. With the election still a month away, opinions could change by then.

26 DAYS TO GO:

1)THE PPP/C IS WAY AHEAD IN THE RACE
2)APNU/PNC IS RUNNING SECOND PLACE AND
3)THE AFC IS DISMALLY IN THE THIRD POSITION

As the days go by if nothing dramatic happens, then as expected the election results might very well mirrors that of 2006.

The rage continues with former executive member of the AFC's Gaumatie Singh who has since endorsed the ruling People’s Progressive Party/Civic over the weekend telling a Port Mourant rally that she has found β€œhonesty and integrity in Donald Ramotar” when compared to the AFC current leadership team.

β€œThey are deceitful, dishonest... the leadership which includes Khemraj Ramjattan and Raphael Trotman. They want to be president and prime minister and they can’t even lead their own party. How can they lead this country?” Singh ask to loud cheers.

β€œYou know what they did to me... I was just one woman who wanted to serve my country... I was attacked and burnt with corrosive acid months after I spoke out against the AFC and their dishonesty,” Singh reported.

The AFC and their goon especially on GNI Forum are known to verbally attack women who is not around to defend themselves,......could they also be accused if attacking Goumattie Singh with acid?

How low can the AFC get with defenceless womenfolk?

One day the truth will eventually surface, now we can only speculate.

Should one also speculate on who was responsible for throwing of feces into the face of Kissoon....

Should one also speculate on who authorised the despatch of the threatening letter to GAWU ?

Why is this Gaumattie " speculation " surfacing at this point in time ?

If I had to guess, I would say that it is surfacing simply because of the fact that Gaumattie has changed Party Affiliation from the AFC to the PPP/C and if we were to look for reason we would have seen that one of those reasons would have been that she was not happy, with the AFC.

Is Gaumattie now thinking that her Acid debackle was as a rssult of her speaking agains't the AFC? The sane person will want to think that because of her speaking out, there might have been some motive for the AFC wanted silence her, and the showering of all the kindness after the act...might simply be a way to get her to beleive the opposite then.

Listen all these people the PPP picked up like.

Joey Jagan
Peter Ramsosoupie - probably related to DG.
Bynoe - Coffin man - DG's comrades from his PNC days.
Joe Hamilton - House of Israel Founder and top terrorist documented for attacking and terrorizing Guyanese.
GetMeSum Burton - another PNCite another colleague from DG's alma matter
Gaumattie Singh

Not one of them bring any votes to the PPP, not one. The PPP is just parading these people to attack and cuss. Ramsasoupoie poor thing is like a lamb his nuts is in the PPP hand, they ruined him and without them giving him a free pass he cannot do shit in Guyana. Even his sister in law endorsed the AFC and I am sure if you went down the line with the rest of his family including his children they all probably would do the same.

PPP/C β€˜unmatched’ development track record in Amerindian communities highlighted

Wednesday, 02 November 2011 13:40
Mabaruma public meeting

THE ruling People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) took its campaign to Mabaruma, Region 1, yesterday, telling residents of its β€œunmatched” track record of development in Amerindian communities.
The basic rights that many Amerindians were denied and the opportunities that they were afforded under the current regime were highlighted at an open air public meeting held in the community.

Prime Minister Samuel Hinds, performing the duties of President, PPP Presidential Candidate Donald Ramotar, Minister of Amerindian Affairs Pauline Sukhai, Minister within the Ministry of Health Dr Bheri Ramsaran, and Minister of Local Government Norman Whittaker were among those who implored the residents to continue backing the ruling party for the development agenda to continue.
The PPP/C is proud of the fact that its supporters in the sub-region account for approximately 90 percent, and that one of the top performers at the recently held Caribbean Secondary Examination Council (CSEC) hails from the region.
Ramotar said that the latter achievement is testimony to the investments government has been making in education in Amerindian communities, achieving the goal of universal access to primary education and narrowing the gap at the secondary level.
β€œOur children in the interior are now beginning, not only to catch up, but in some cases, to even outpace children on the coast,” Ramotar said, describing as criminal circumstances in the past that resulted in only 30 percent of children entering secondary school.

Whereas in the past, the services of teachers from the coastland were in demand to supplement and sometimes offset the problem of teacher shortage in the interior regions, schools are now being managed by graduate teachers from the interior.
Leomie Wilson, a resident of the community, said students from Mabaruma are now copping eight and 10 grade ones at the CSEC level, while many are being trained at the technical and tertiary levels.
Minister Sukhai said that the hot meal and school uniform programmes have been stimuli to improved school attendance and performance in the hinterland. She also alluded to the $94.5M dormitory at Liliendaal that houses over 120 students of the Hinterland Scholarship Programme.
Improved access to health in Amerindian communities has been a noteworthy achievement of the PPP/C, and Toshao Alnes Samuels of White Water told many success stories.
He compared the days when malaria was the main threat in the community to today, when health care delivery is far advanced.
Recently, the community benefited from the services of a team of medical professionals who performed gallstone removal operations and hysterectomies. Minister Ramsarran disclosed that up to late Monday evening, about 17 surgeries were performed by the medical team.

β€œWe don’t visit with one and two doctors now. When I put a team of doctors on a plane… it is 10 or 12 of the best in the country… to come here to help you, the Amerindian people,” Minister Ramsaran said.
Mabaruma is now benefitting from the services of a $250M hospital which Minister Ramsaran said was criticized as a white elephant by the opposition, but has today proven to be a necessary facility.
β€œThe PPP will build such β€˜white elephants’ in any Amerindian community where we see it’s needed,” Minister Ramsaran said.
Similar sentiments were expressed by Prime Minister Hinds, who acknowledged that it is costly to get services to the hinterland, but at the same time, it is a worthwhile investment. He reiterated government’s policy of ensuring all Guyanese benefit from equal access to necessary services, regardless of their religion, race or creed.
β€œWe look after the broadest number of people. In our housing programme, in our roads and in everything that we do… we set out to serve the people, not only a certain set, but everyone,” Hinds said.
The government’s scholarship programme that has allowed young Guyanese to pursue career studies overseas has led to a record group of students from the hinterland benefiting.
Two Cuban trained doctors are at present permanently stationed in Mabaruma, and with the large batch of Guyanese soon to return from Cuba, this number will increase

CRUCIAL FACTORS IN GUYANA’S POLL BATTLE
Written by Rickey Singh

Wednesday, 02 November 2011

THE CAMPAIGN for Guyana’s fifth general elections on November 28, since the restoration of electoral democracy in October 1992 after 24 years of consecutive governance by the People’s National Congress (PNC)-- is now in full swing across the estimated 250-mile coastland and far-flung interior regions of this CARICOM member state .

When nominations took place last Thursday for the presidential, parliamentary and regional lists of candidates, seven parties were identified by the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM).
But it came as no surprise when last Monday just the trio of major parliamentary parties had secured the Commission’s approval of their lists of candidates

The approved parties competing for the presidency and 65-member parliament, are the incumbent People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C), the main opposition A Partnership for National Unity (APNUβ€”largely the old People’s National Congress (PNC) rebranded with a couple of insignificant minor parties; and the Alliance For Change (AFC)
By yesterday, only the PPP/C had distributed its released election manifesto amid growing complaints to GECOM of repeated defacing and even destruction to its posters and banners.
Both APNU and AFC are expected to release their manifestos by weekend.
Last week, prior to the submission of nominations, a tracking poll conducted by the North American Caribbean Teachers Association (NACTA) pointed to a return to state power for an unprecedented fifth consecutive five-year term by the incumbent PPP/C, now under the presidential leadership of Donald Ramotar, the party’s long-serving General Secretary.

NACTA’s forecas

Though NACTA may not have the impressive performance records of older and more popular pollsters in the region, it has managed to score reasonably well in forecasting results of elections in Trinidad and Tobago and countries of the Eastern Caribbean, as well as for Guyana.
At the previous August 2006 national election in Guyana, the PPP/C, then under the presidential leadership of the now outgoing Head of State, Bharrat Jagdeo, had recorded its fourth consecutive victory by winning 36 of the 65 seats for the National Assemblyβ€”a gain of two from the 2001 pollβ€”and representing some 54 percent of the valid votes declared.
For their part, the then PNC, under the presidential and party leadership of Robert Corbin, won 22 seats, a loss of six, while the AFC, which was contesting its first national election following formation just over a year earlier, had succeeded in taking five seats, with the remaining two going to minority partiesβ€”The United Force (TUF) and β€˜ROAR; (Guyana Action Party/Rise, Organise and Rebuild Guyana). For the coming November 28 poll, TUF’s leader, Manzoor Nadir, having earlier survived a leadership challenge, is contesting as a candidate of the PPP/C. Not surprising, as he is the incumbent party’s Minister of Labour. The surprises of significance would include those who are now new candidates of the APNU and AFC. With the PNC losing the previous two elections under current leader, Robert Corbin as presidential candidate, the party opted to face this month’s quite tough electoral challenge under the umbrella of APNU, with an ex-Brigadier of the Guyana Defence Force, David Granger, as its presidential candidate, while Corbin remains leader of the PNC.

Amongs'the β€œsuprises”

Granger, who has already become the focus of controversial campaign claims about his tenure in the army under the era of the late President Forbes Burnham, has as his running-mate as Prime Ministerial candidate, Dr Rupert Roopnarine. He was once a co-leader of the Working People’s Alliance (WPA), known as the party of the assassinated historian, Dr Walter Rodney, who was killed by a bomb planted by a former Sergeant of the Guyana Defence Force.
As the saying goes, in party politics all things are possible. Now, therefore, the WPA, which is on record as holding the PNC responsible for the murder of Rodney, is one of APNU’s β€œpartners” in the quest to prevent the PPP from retaining the government on November 28. And with the ex-GDF Brigadier as presidential candidate, Roopnarine, one in the frontline leadership to promote the circumstances of Rodney’s death, is APNU’s Prime Ministerial candidate.
A further surprise that came from last week’s APNU’s list of candidates is that of former Police Commissioner, Winston Felix, who had retired amid a highly controversial broadcast of a tape-recorded telephone conversation he had with a then PNC parliamentarian at a time of serious gun-related killings and disruptions in urban and rural areas.
Since murders, armed robberies and narco-trafficking crimes are part of the issues in the current election campaign, allegations have been flowing across platforms with APNU’s ex-GDF Granger and ex-top cop Felix being in the firing line, while the incumbent PPP/C and its outgoing President are verbally blasted with claims of sheltering drug traffickers and those involved in financial corruption.
Not to be outdone, the AFC, whose leadership, for both the 2006 election as well as that for November 28, is made up of former defectors from both the PPP and PNC, has managed to spring a few surprises of its own with candidates who have departed from the two main parties. The best known among the defectors are Dr Richard Vanwest Charles, a son-in-law of the late President Burnham and a former Health Minister; and Moses Nagamootoo, longstanding stalwart of the PPP and a former Minister of Information. Both Charles and Nagamootoo believe their respective defections can contribute to the AFC’s influencing the defeat of the PPP on November 28. Nagamootoo’s ambition was to have been the PPP’s presidential candidate. But Dr β€˜Joey’ Jagan, son of the late Presidents Dr Cheddi and Janet Jagan, is contemptuous of the boasts coming from APNU and AFC about defeat of the PPP, and was quite optimistic of the incumbent’s return to government, when he announced last week his own so-called β€œhome coming” to the fold of the PPP, of which he was in earlier years critical.
With 25 days to go, only the electorate of some 475,496 eligible voters know what will be the outcome when ballots are counted. According to GECOM, the current electoral register includes approximately 46 percent of voters who are between 18 and 35 years of age and, depending on their response, could prove decisive in determining on November 28 the next government of Guyana.

With his claims that Dr. Jagan chose him successor to the presidency…
Written by PARVATI PERSAUD-EDWARDS
Thursday, 03 November 2011
Moses Nagamootoo commits blasphemy by lying on the Father of the Nation

The PPP is a juggernaut that is energized by the power of the people, and that is why Nagamootoo’s defection is of minimal concern to the party. So said party stalwart Clement Rohee who, like Nagamootoo and other senior members of the PPP, had been moulded and guided from youthful days by the iconic Jagans. However, Moses Nagamootoo thought he would have been anointed successor to Dr. Jagan as Head-of-State. It is believed that he pursued a law degree, not to pursue a profession, but to qualify himself for the position of the highest executive in the land.

His hopes were dashed, however, when Bharrat Jagdeo was appointed by Mrs. Jagan as her successor.
Moses Nagamootoo was always a favourite of the Jagans, and he was one of the first of the PPP-ites to be given a ministerial position. At a press conference held at Freedom House Clement Rohee said that, as they struggled with the Jagans to restore democracy in the land, ministerial positions and power were the least considerations in any party member’s mind, because they had no expectations to be elevated to such high offices.
However, according to Rohee, Nagamootoo always had illusions of grandeur, which frustrated Dr. Jagan because, while he was Information Minister, rather than promoting the Government’s policies and publicising the works being undertaken to rebuild the country, Nagamootoo was hyping himself to the public.
Rohee contended that Nagamootoo had defected from the party in spirit long ago, ever since Bharrat Jagdeo had been named Head-of-State instead of the former; and he (Rohee) quoted from various publications in which Nagamootoo had voiced his dissatisfaction over many years because he claimed that β€œDr. Jagan had chosen me as his successor.”

Nagamootoo has since then, according to Rohee, been lobbying with party supporters and delegates to support his aspirations as a presidential candidate; even and until this last nomination for a PPP/C presidential candidate.

Nagamootoo has opportunistically kept his feet in both camps, according to Rohee, because while he was lobbying for leadership position in the PPP, he was also simultaneously endorsing Khemraj Ramjattan and a third force.

quote:
All the criticisms that Nagamootoo is now leveling against the party and its incumbent President cannot negate the fact that the leadership provided during the past years of PPP/C administration in this country has driven this nation’s development on an upward trajectory that has wrested Guyana out of the jaws of absolute poverty and hopelessness that it had inherited in 1992 to an elevation where it is poised to compete with first-world nations for its development paradigm.

Rohee said the party tolerated Nagamootoo’s antics; recognizing that in every family or human construct there would always be dissatisfaction, but he contended that Nagamootoo is betraying Cheddi Jagan’s legacy because he has continuously attempted to destroy the cohesiveness within Cheddi Jagan’s party.

President Jagdeo has said that Nagamootoo is suffering from the β€œsour grapes” syndrome, and that the latter lied on Dr. Jagan by saying that Dr. Jagan told him in the Rupununi that he (Nagamootoo) would succeed the good doctor as Head-of-State, which everyone who knew Dr. Jagan would know to be an untruth, because Dr. Jagan built his party on consensual positions; and consultation with the body politic on important issues was supreme party policy.

quote:
That Nagamootoo was never considered as presidential material after he was tested and found wanting in a ministerial position, is a given – something his predilection for glory-seeking found extremely unpalatable, hence his egoistic declarations that the PPP would fail without him, when in effect he has been deadwood in that party for many years, out of choice, because he refused to contribute unless his fulminations on national policies were given prominence.

That Nagamootoo was lobbying to become President, and his subsequent bitterness against the party was as a result of his being overlooked for that leadership position was evident when his brother, Keeran Nagamootoo, said that his brother was supposed to be the first choice for the presidential candidate, because he was a senior member who served the party since Cheddi Jagan’s time. This indicates that all Nagamootoo’s relatives expected him to be elevated to the highest office in the land because of his standing in the party, forgetting that many others served in Cheddi Jagan’s time, and they have not fought to become President.

Those who expressed an interest – such as Gail Teixeira, Ralph Ramkarran, and Clement Rohee, were the ones who are upholding Cheddi Jagan’s legacy, because they bowed to the greater good of the party and the nation.

They are all eminently qualified, as Donald Ramotar is, but there can only be one Presidential Candidate within the PPP/C construct and the other contenders allowed good sense and the spirit of Cheddi Jagan to prevail in cohesive and compromising approaches to conflict-resolution, which has always hallmarked the Jaganite leadership.
This is what broke the camel’s back – or rather, was the deciding factor for Nagamootoo’s leaving the PPP/C because, now that President Jagdeo has signed himself out of the presidency, he felt that he commanded enough support to force himself into being elected presidential candidate of the party.
But party leaders knew the character who was always bombastic, egoistic, and who has always arrogated to himself the β€œright as successor to the presidency”, as if this position is a prize that he has won in some championship competition, which he considers he has won by right of longevity of association with the Jagans and the party.

His brother contended that Dr. Jagan had said at two political meetings that Nagamootoo should be president, and that Nagamootoo was treated unfairly during the last nominations also, because, β€œFor this election, instead of electing a candidate, they selected one, which was not fair to him (Nagamootoo).” However, there is no record of Dr. Jagan ever making such a declaration or promise.
The brother went on to say that β€œwhen they had the last central committee meeting to elect a presidential candidate he had the most votes, but he went to study and Bharrat Jagdeo served as President” intimating that Bharrat Jagdeo became President by default because of Nagamootoo’s absence due to studies abroad. It seems that the entire family of the Nagamootoos is suffering from delusions of grandeur.

His own daughter admitted in a letter to the media that her father left the PPP because he was not considered for high office. She affirmed that her father was offered ambassadorial posting to Ottawa – one of the most prestigious foreign service postings, but he refused it because, for him, it was all or nothing; so the party leadership, fed up with his aggression and self-promotion, did indeed sideline his grand pretensions; hence his β€œsour grapes” actions.

So there it is, his own relatives are revealing the real reason for his defection from Cheddi Jagan’s party because, according to Keeran Nagamootoo, β€œBeing a minister of government, he should have been given a chance to be president.”

President Jagdeo had also stressed that if Nagamootoo believed all those negative things he is saying about the party is true, then why was he lobbying so strongly to become leader of such a party.
As Rohee had pointed out during his press conference, Nagamootoo has always been fickle in his political life, positions and public utterances; and this does not lend itself to the quality of cohesion that is necessary for a leadership construct; and certainly not to the elements that create solid and strong leadership.

All the criticisms that he is now levelling against the party and its incumbent President cannot negate the fact that the leadership provided during the past years of PPP/C administration in this country has driven this nation’s development on an upward trajectory that has wrested Guyana out of the jaws of absolute poverty and hopelessness that it had inherited in 1992, to an elevation where it is poised to compete with first-world nations for its development paradigm.
Also the strong, solid leadership that primarily Presidents Jagan and Jagdeo have provided – together and individually, has catalysed Guyana on the world scenario as a force to be reckoned with – in major areas, where Guyanese, irrespective of creed, ethnic evaluations, or religion can stride with pride and dignity, instead of being viewed as pathetic citizens of a country ranked below Haiti as the poorest nation in the world.

Can either Khemraj Ramjattan or Moses Nagamootoo ever produce such quality of leadership?
Moses Nagamootoo committed the worst blasphemy when he lied on the Father of the Nation, Dr. Cheddi Jagan, because when Dr. Jagan recognized that he might be forced to bow to his mortality and - although his spirit battled to the very end, concede the welfare and the future of his adored Guyana and his most-beloved Guyanese people, he ensured that this nation’s future was placed into the hands of the one he had groomed to be his real successor via a letter and directions that he gave to his most trusted companion, his wife and fellow patriot Janet Jagan, trusting her to carry out his last wishes, of which she was au fait. A copy of that letter can be seen in Nadira Jagan-Brancier’s tribute to her iconic parents: β€œMy Father’s Fight for Guyana’s Freedom.” Those who know Dr. Jagan’s handwriting will immediately recognize the veracity of that document.
Dr. Jagan had meticulously planned the transitory stages of Bharrat Jagdeo’s eventual succession to the presidency of the country, because the latter was the repository of the dying President’s plans and programmes for this nation.

It was the young Bharrat Jagdeo who had travelled with Dr. Jagan to international financing fora in urgent efforts to reduce and/or alleviate in one way or another Guyana’s crippling debt burden that was stymieing this nation’s growth and development.
It was Bharrat Jagdeo who had combined Dr. Jagan’s vision and his projections into formulating a National Development Strategy and a Poverty Reduction Strategy, which have been adopted and adapted by other countries via the UN.

Dr. Cheddi Jagan had recognized in the young, self-effacing Bharrat Jagdeo a strong patriotism, an honest and solid character, a similar intent of purpose on developmental and poverty-reduction issues, and a like-minded passion for promoting unity in the nation; as well as unsurpassing brilliance almost rivalling that of himself, and this was the ultimate trust he reposed in his wife and fellow freedom-fighter, Janet.
Both of the iconic Jagans had known intimately the leadership potential of the various members of the party that they had founded in 1950. They were also quite aware of the capacities and the capabilities of the leadership elite of the PPP, and the urgent needs of the country at that particular point in its developmental transition – and that is why Bharrat Jagdeo was chosen as successor to the presidency of Guyana and Donald Ramotar was chosen as successor to the leadership of the PPP – the country and the party that the Jagans were passionately devoted to.
So it is a natural progression – as formulated by Dr. Cheddi and Mrs. Janet Jagan, for Donald Ramotar to succeed Bharrat Jagdeo to lead the country after the latter demits office to ensure continuity of progressive endeavours that the PPP/C governmental construct has initiated and propelled – not least re-uniting the nation in the spirit of 1953, which was the Father of the Nation’s undying dream.
Everyone knows what a perfect couple the Jagans were, and how passionately loyal they were to each other; thus it is reasonable to assume that Mrs. Jagan would have been privy to Dr. Jagan’s desire (if such was the case) for Moses Nagamootoo to ever become President of the country.
However, those on the inside knew how frustrated and bitterly disappointed the Jagan’s were over Nagamootoo’s pretensions and self-glorification at the expense of the Government and the party; and they envisioned the catastrophe that would have been visited upon their beloved Guyanese people were they to unleash such a person with unlimited powers in the country. The mere fact that the leadership of the party chose Bharrat Jagdeo to succeed Mrs. Jagan speaks volumes, because then Mrs. Jagan was still the matriarchal figure who, while not imposing her will, was honoured as the voice of the founding father of the PPP, and the leadership caucus respected her guidance and adhered to party principles on consensual positions on major issues.

That Nagamootoo was never considered as presidential material after he was tested and found wanting in a ministerial position, is a given – something his predilection for glory-seeking found extremely unpalatable, hence his egoistic declarations that the PPP would fail without him, when in effect he had been deadwood in that party for many years, out of choice, because he refused to contribute unless his fulminations on national policies were given prominence.

Donald Ramotar summed it up by describing him as of the β€˜nagas’ family – the snake family: And such reference is a clear description of betrayal, because snakes are known for their forked tongues and their venomous attacks.

Dancing with the β€œStars”
November 2, 2011 | By KNews | Filed Under Features / Columnists, Freddie Kissoon
In its last Sunday editorial, the Stabroek News looked at the deluge of cross-over candidates in this election season and opined that it is left to be seen after the results are known what they would have brought to their respective parties. The editorial concluded that, β€œMoses Nagamootoo is the one who potentially could have the most impact.”
There can be no doubt that in that plethora of cross-over politicians, Moses Nagamootoo, is the only one that can claim star status. The rest simply do not have the brand name that can bring electoral gains to their newly found homes. In some cases the situation is so absurd that the converts can cause their parties to lose votes. There is the comical situation where Joey Jagan explained that he has returned to his father’s party to ensure that his father’s legacy is carried out. Then in the same breath he said he is not joining his father’s party, the PPP, but the Civic component. Beat that for an example of hilarity.
The Stabroek News referred to Peter Ramsaroop in that very editorial as β€œthe eternal grasshopper.” That is being extra-generous to Ramsaroop who has become a liability to any party he joined at this last minute of the campaign.
Names like Dr. Emmanuel Cummings and Gillian Burton would not transport substantial votes to Freedom House. They are simply persons who do not have the years of public involvement to have established constituencies of their own. The same goes for Dr. Rishi Thakur who switched from the AFC to APNU. I am not sure if Rajendra Bissesar could do maximum damage to the PPP.
In some instances, the defection can bring anger and resentment. I don’t think Joseph Hamilton has ever been popular enough to weaken the PNC’s base. Frederick Mc Wilfred of Bartica was a surprise for the PPP. But being so vocal and radical in his stand against miners’ oppression by the Government, his volte face can be seen as a move driven by selfish motives.
In many of the defections, voters will see these newcomers as wanting to carve out a future for themselves only, and that they were thinking only of themselves.
Some names, of course, are not on the parties’ lists, and their capture would not have been just a political occurrence but a major gold find. One can think of Norris Witter and Lincoln Lewis of the trade union movement. Civil rights activists Mark Benschop and Christopher Ram and the environmentalist, Dr. Janet Bulkan.
If these persons should publicly endorse a political party, the image and credibility heights will rise for that organization.
Unfortunately, Sash Sawh’s brother-in-law who came out in support of the AFC will not widen the net for the AFC, because such a person needs to be on the ground where the highlighting of his persona to the citizens can allow for some kind of conversation among voters.
If Mr. Persaud is going to do damage to the PPP he has to be in Guyana where he can bear his soul for the citizens to see. In the end, there may be only one star that is dancing, and that is Moses Nagamootoo.
It would be silly to dismiss over forty years of service to the PPP as meaning nothing to traditional PPP voters. Nagamootoo has a number of values attached to him. First, he has no baggage. He doesn’t have to explain why he went through a series of organizations before he landed in the PPP.
Secondly, his name has not been associated with any public sordid affair that when you think back it might cause you to have second thoughts. Thirdly and most impressively, he has stood out as the only PPP leader that was willing to speak out against the wrong direction the PPP has taken since Cheddi Jagan died.
Fourthly – and this is the factor that will lacerate the PPP – Nagamootoo claims Jaganite status. He claims he represents the Jaganite legacy.
Now if his detractors inside the PPP are going to come after him, they will have to confront him on that score. To decapitate Nagamootooo you have to prove that he is a betrayer and an insulter of the Jaganite legacy. But who in the PPP can do that? You have to be clean as a whistle if you are going to take on Nagamootoo’s claim to being an inheritor of the Jaganite legacy. And the stable of the present PPP is so dirty that in a confrontation with Nagamootoo it can be counter-productive.
The man who parted the sea looks like he has just divided the PPP into pieces.

Mboya Wood turns tables in Buxton

APNU supporters came out to heckle, stayed to listen
A well-orchestrated invasion by APNU supporters, some of whom were planted among the PPP supporters who turned out to listen to the speakers at a PPP/C meeting in Buxton yesterday evening, and some of whom had amassed a short distance away with APNU posters before storming the PPP/C meeting with shouts of β€œWe want Granger”, backfired because, first PM Sam Hinds, in his calm, measured, reasonable way encouraged the APNU supporters to listen to the speakers, no matter which party they are supporting, and then rationalize their choices before casting their votes on elections day.
But the star of the evening was undoubtedly Mboya Wood, who quelled the strident hecklers and turned the tables on APNU, which had intended to disrupt the PPP/C meeting – a strategy that backfired when the APNU supporters quietened and began listening intently to first Mboya Wood and then PPP/C Presidential Candidate Donald Ramotar as the former gave his reasons for supporting the incumbent party, and the latter outlined the developments so far undertaken by the government, and the projected developments of the incoming government that he will head.
Wood described the mixture of APNU and PPP/C supporters as a beautiful Guyanese mosaic. He encouraged the crowd to be civil, as incivility and contentious behaviour will get no one anywhere, because dialogue with each other as intelligent people who will listen to each other before making choices is the right way to solve problems.
When he had captured the crowd’s attention he related stories of life under the former PNC administration, when Buxtonians suffered the wrath of the PNC right alongside other communities. During those days, Wood recalled, Buxton had no proper infrastructure, no water, β€œβ€¦no proper anything”, and no hope, causing many to join the WPA under Walter Rodney.
According to Wood, those were the days when people were not free to make such choices and his life was near forfeited in planned executions several times. He was also deprived of his living as a contraband trader; and a tertiary education because, after two years at UG, when he was about to commence his mandatory national service, he was warned by a stranger of plans to eliminate him – either by drowning or a purposeful accident, so he escaped to Berbice, where he got a job at Bookers sugar estate.
However, he said Burnham had then stated that his β€œβ€¦steel was sharper now”, and strange people started to shadow his movements; but he was warned not to ride on the public road as plans were afoot to kill him in a staged accident.
When he was eventually cornered, recalled Wood, β€œtwo Indian brothers” saved his life.
He pointed to a transition today where David Hinds had joined the APNU configuration, even after Hinds and his fellow WPA member had been jailed by the PNC, while WPA leader Walter Rodney had been allegedly killed by that administration.
Referring to this as a healthy relationship, he posited that he also should be free to join a political party of his choice. β€œWho dares to tell me that I cannot join the PPP/C?” he thundered, then related a progressive series of incidents that drew him to that party and convinced him that this was the best choice for continued development in the country.
He recalled that, in 2010, during the 170 years Emancipation celebrations, he recognised that the village needed urgent financial and other help, so he emailed fellow Buxtonian, Presidential Advisor Odinga Lumumba, which made his colleagues very angry.
When he was facilitated a meeting with President Bharrat Jagdeo, he articulated the concerns of the Buxtonians, especially a lie that had been peddled that the President had denigrated Buxtonians.
The President denied this charge and challenged Wood to search the media archives and if there is any evidence to be found of his culpability in this regard then he would personally apologise. However, Wood made no such discovery.
He told the President that Buxtonian women had been severely traumatised by the events that had made their community a pariah in the Guyanese society for over eight years; so the President invited Buxtonian single parents to a meeting at the Stadium to resolve their issues and address their problems.
But Wood was not satisfied. He told the President that Buxton needed a complete overhaul, whereupon the former was informed by the President that the help was always there on offer, but was rejected by the village leaders.
So Wood braved those who dissented to this new relationship being formed and invited the President to an historic meeting in Buxton, which was an overwhelming success. Since then, with the Buxtonians themselves opening up their community to exploration of their potential for growth and development, that village has been changing by leaps and bounds for the better.
Wood reminded the Buxtonians that in that first and subsequent visits to that community by the President, every promise made by President Jagdeo and his officers has been kept; and he offered himself to be the intermediary between the community and the PPP/C administration to articulate their concerns and ensure that they are addressed by the Government.
Wood said he was prepared to be the beacon of hope as a representative of Buxtonians and guaranteed that he will be the bridge and represent the community’s concerns to the administration.
He reminded the listeners that when he reached out to President Jagdeo, Buxtonians received that help; and said that he could guarantee that the PPP/C administration under a Donald Ramotar presidency, would continue the development process started under President Jagdeo.
This set the stage for Presidential Candidate Donald Ramotar, who outlined to an enraptured audience the developments achieved so far by the PPP/C administration under President Jagdeo’s overwhelmingly successful leadership, and the projected developments that he envisages for the future of the nation.
Other speakers included Presidential Advisor on Governance, Ms Gail Teixeira; Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee; and new member of the PPP/C Joe Hamilton.
Presidential Advisor on empowerment, Odinga Lumumba, chaired the meeting, which eventually bonded APNU supporters and PPP/C supporters in β€œβ€¦a beautiful Guyanese mosaic”, which is an indication that unity in this country can be achieved with the right approach, because, at heart, Guyanese from every walk of life have demonstrated that what is important, essentially, is an improved life and living, which the PPP/C has certainly provided over the years.
As Donald Ramotar said, β€œIf it is good today, it will be better tomorrow.”

PPP/C concerned at opposition attempts to disrupt Buxton rally
Written by

…will write GECOM on the matter
THE more than 700 persons in attendance at the PPP/C Rally in village of Buxton, on the East Coast of Demerara on Thursday, is reflective of the community’s desire to listen to what the People’s Progressive Party (PPP/C) has to offer in the process of transforming the county .
Minister of Agriculture and PPP/C Executive member, Robert Persaud, made this declaration during a press briefing at Freedom House, yesterday.
According to Persaud, the meeting has been one of the better attended ones, where community members came out in support of the incumbent party, despite the attempted disruption by a small group of persons.
He explained,β€œ The meeting started well, persons came out, but there was a group assembled at the market square, comprising persons from as far as Beterverwagting, who, upon instructions, proceeded to the site and attempted to assault and abuse residents and tried, unsuccessfully, to disrupt the meeting. It was commendable that persons there stood their ground.”
He noted with concern that the attempted disruption was clearly and centrally orchestrated and organized, as a former PNC β€œpresidential aspirant” was identified in the crowd.
β€œWe have photographs of that individual. We consider that an act of desperation. I know both A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and the Alliance for Change (AFC) would have been grossly disturbed by the positive response and certainly would have activated this effort to disturb the meeting. The political opposition was shocked by the turn out last night, but that is no excuse for anyone to engage in such violent behaviour,” he said.
Several PPP/C supporters were also beaten as they exited the meeting site, he informed.
In light of this, Persaud expressed the hope that all political parties would desist from such behaviour, which, according to him, is in no way helpful to the β€œpeaceful and civil elections climate”.
In addition, he emphasised that every single Guyanese has the right to listen and to participate in the political process without any impediment, which is a fundamental right the PPP/C has always advocated for.
He said, β€œTo see the intimidation aimed at supporters and the disruption, it is not only an assault on the PPP/C, but an assault on the democratic spirit and on our people’s willingness to participate in the process freely and fairly. I want to see the AFC, APNU, the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), the international community and civil society condemn such behaviour.”
The PPP/C will be writing to GECOM on this matter and will also be enclosing copies of the tapes of the Buxton Rally, Persaud disclosed.

COUNTDOWN FOR THE NEXT GOVERNMENT BEGINS

20 DAYS TO GO:

1)THE PPP/C IS WAY AHEAD IN THE RACE
2)APNU/PNC IS RUNNING SECOND PLACE AND
3)THE AFC IS DISMALLY IN THE THIRD POSITION

As the days go by if nothing dramatic happens, then as expected the election results might very well mirrors that of 2006.

The President said that David Granger from the APNU, on the other hand, was instrumental in stealing ballot boxes for the PNC and rigging elections in Guyana.

With regard to the AFC, he reminded that Khemraj Ramjattan was booted from the PPP as a result of his association with drug dealers.

β€œEven if we take away the track record of the PPP/C, which is a formidable one of progress, the choice is clear,” the president said.

Gail Teixeira, said that never before in the history of Guyana have the Amerindian people been involved in matters relating to their own development, as they are today.
She said that this country has evolved into one that is now a model at the international level, as it has been able to show consistent economic development and stability.
The next PPP/C rally is scheduled for Whim, Corentyne, today at 17:00hrs.

Twenty days more, then the AFC will be kicking bricks on the roads, Naga (the snake) will be a struggling as an attorney, the APNU will wonder where have they gone wrong, and so the incumbent PPP/C will continue with task of development amazing the harshest of critics.

Then try me. Why don't you have a go at the President's salary, constitution reform, Amerind land demarcation or any issue of your choosing so I can smear your silly behind across the floor.

I am doing exactly what you are doing here....note it is a protest since campaigning is not or should not be allowed on the site per the rules.
