Venezuela requested membership to Mercosur at around 7 years ago. Although the entry of Venezuela into the group has been approved by the Parliaments of Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay, the country has not become full member because the right wing dominated Paraguayan parliament rejected the request on the basis that Venezuela under Chavez was not a democracy.

The suspension of Paraguay that follows after the coup would, in theory, eliminate the only obstacle Venezuela has to become full member.

... and it happened. Venezuela becomes full member of Mercosur on July 31st, 2012 following suspension of Paraguay. Very interesting result. The Paraguayan parliament had rejected the entry of Venezuela to Mercosur because it wasn't a "democracy" and had promised never to accept it. Now after the coup the Paraguayan coupers lose whatever bit of moral authority they still had. Paraguay's must be the most stupid parliament on earth.
