Georgetown-Magistrate-court[www.inewsguyana.com] – Two traffic ranks attached to Sparendaam Police Station were on Tuesday brought to the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court to answer corruption charges.

Twenty four – year – old Marvin Thomas of Amelia’s Ward, Linden and 30 – year – old Fitzroy Nicholson of Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice, were both released on $20,000 bail by Magistrate Ann McLennan after pleading not guilty to the joint charge.

It is alleged that on September 9, they corruptly obtained from Nazeem Khan the sum of $30,000 as an inducement for forbearing to charge him with the traffic offence of overtaking on

double solid yellow lines.

Police prosecutor Dinero Jones, did not reveal the prosecution facts to the court. Also the prosecutor did not oppose bail and indicated that the investigation file was completed.

Both defendants were represented by Attorney Patrice Henry.

He pleaded that since each of his clients was charged they have been cooperating with the police throughout the investigation.

Henry requested that the matter be transferred to the Sparendaam Magistrate Court for October 7.

Corruption continues in Guyana as it did under the previous government.I was clearing a package and just next to me the custom officer was berating one of the porters telling him that his eyes passed hers because he was complaining that he only got $500 from the transaction, and that if he get her mad, he will get nothing the next time. This porter a few minutes prior was trying to make an arrangement with me. Passed Sparendaam yesterday on the wad to GT. The police had stopped a miniCab. The driver and police were negotiating a short distance from the bus. In front of GRA yesterday, a driver parked illegally and negotiated a raise out there in the open. The officer controlling the line for renewal of driver licence was taking a raise for allowing people to go into the line in front of the 40 or more persons who were waiting. There is now an investigation at Supernaam stelling regarding drivers paying to jump the line to get on to the boat. Many businessmen I know say that they pay when asked because it delays what they need to do, a cost of doing business. the more things change, the more they stay the same. I really do not know how this can be changed, I hope that people getting charged and convicted will send the message that it is unacceptable.

These type of corruption can be rooted out,the authorities

need to set up undercover agents arrest and prosecute

the offenders(both gov't agent and customer)
