Gunmen storm Garnett St Car Wash

Two gunmen “cleaned up” occupants at the Mingles Car Wash in Garnett Street, Campbellville, on Sunday

A day-light robbery has left occupants of a Garnett Street, Campbellville, Georgetown traumatised after gunmen robbed them early Sunday afternoon. The incident occurred sometime around 13:15h at the Mingles Car Wash and Detailing.

Guyana Times was made to understand two men entered the Car Wash located at 43 Garnett Street, under the pretext of washing a CG motorcycle, however as soon as everyone was distracted, they pounced, robbing the owner, Mike Fung, a customer and two workers. The men escaped with a quantity of cash, several cellular phones, jewellery, and a firearm.

Speaking with this newspaper, Fung stated that the entire ordeal lasted for about three to four minutes. The man r noted that one worker refused to wash the bike as such another one proceeded to do so.

Fung recalled he was talking to another customer that was having his car washed at the time when one of the men ran up to him and placed a gun to his head. He said the gunman then reached for his .9 mm Beretta handgun.

By this time the other accomplice was at his side and relieved Fung of his gold chain and two rings amounting to some $2 million, approximately $65,000 cash and his Samsung Smartphone. According to the businessman, he recognised one of men from a visit a few days ago. “They know everything, they know I had my firearm on me… but I recognised one of them… he was here before, that’s how I know him,” he said.

The gunmen did not spare the other persons present. After robbing Fung, they turned onto the customer who was sitting nearby and took away his cellular phone and wallet. They also relieved one of the workers of his cell phone.

The worker, Lloyd December, related to Guyana Times that when the men came they asked how much to wash the bike and he said $500 but they said they only had $400. “I tell them alright man don’t worry about the $100. I blow down the bike and before I start soap it down, I see the two of them walk up and stick up the boss,” the man recounted.

After the men finished robbing the occupants, they jumped on the bike and rode off in an eastern direction along Garnett Street. This newspaper was told the armed one was donned in a black shirt and blue pants, while the other had on a green shirt and brown pants. The perpetrators were said to be young men in their early 20s.

When this publication arrived on scene following the incident, the businessman bemoaned the attitude of the police in handling the matter. He pointed out that when they called to report the matter the 911 emergency lines were not working, then they got onto the Station but the officer who took the call did not show any sign of urgency.
