Businessman shot during botched robbery

A 33-year-old businessman is battling for his life in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC) after he was shot several times during an attempted robbery at a house at North East La Penitence, Georgetown.
Peter Chow of Kitty, Georgetown, had reportedly accompanied his wife, Rayana Jaundoo on Thursday to a salon in the area to get her hair done in order to attend her nephew’s funeral today (Friday).
The couple arrived at the hairdresser’s house at about 10:45h but the shooting incident took place at about 13:30h when a young man turned up at the salon and

initially demanded that the two ladies hand over their jewellery.
However, as he entered the house, he saw Chow asleep on the couch and as such, turned his attention on the businessman, who was wearing several gold chains and finger rings. The gunman reportedly placed the gun to Chow’s head with the intention of waking him up.
In a frantic state, the businessman jumped out of his sleep and pushed the gunman, who retaliated by discharging several rounds.
After realising that the man was shot, the young bandit fled the scene leaving the injured Chow in a pool of blood.
Chow was picked up and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he underwent surgery. Jaundoo when contacted told Guyana Times she telephoned the hairdresser and rescheduled her appointment, due to the funeral today. Her initial appointment was set for Saturday.
While there, she explained that her husband fell asleep on the couch as he waited on her.
“My hair was almost done when the young man came up and told us not to move and to hand over all our personal belongings…but as he entered, he realised my husband was sleeping and without hesitation carried out the attack,” she explained.
She further stated that after shooting her husband, the gunman ran away without anything. “He did not get to take any jewellery… he just panic and did not take anything,” Jaundoo noted.
Guyana Times understands that earlier this year, Chow was shot during another attempted robbery. In that instance, he was shot several times by a lone gunman. No one was arrested for that shooting incident.
Nevertheless, the Police have launched an investigation into Thursday’s shooting incident.

People are expressing their freedom to wear things they like against the risk of being injured or killed for it. Mayor Koch once said if we ought to be afraid of terrorists who targeted landmarks in our city, we would have to keep the statue of liberty in a closet. Thankfully, it's still standing. In these cases, a balanced approach is needed with caution.
