Criticism rains down on Trump after he cancels visit to WWI cemetery due to weather

U.S. President Donald Trump is attracting criticism after he cancelled a trip to a cemetery for American war dead near Paris — due to rainy weather.

Trump had been scheduled to take part in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery and observe a moment of silence at the site.

The site marks the 1918 Battle of Belleau Wood, in which some 1,800 American soldiers perished over a three-week period while fighting alongside French troops to repel German forces.

“The President and First Lady’s trip to Ainse-Marne American Cemetery and Memorial has been canceled due to scheduling and logistical difficulties caused by the weather,” the White House said in a statement.

White House chief of staff Gen. John Kelly and chairman of the joint chiefs of staff Gen. Joe Dunford attended on Trump’s behalf.

It wasn’t clear what Trump did with his time instead of visiting the cemetery, although he did send a tweet around that time wishing a “Happy 243rd Birthday” to the U.S. Marine Corps.

A few hours later, he issued a tweet hailing his “productive meetings” with world leaders, and another one assailing Florida Democrats for “trying to steal” two elections — a likely reference to the state’s Senate and gubernatorial elections that are headed for a recount.

Bloomberg reported that Trump had been set to travel to Aisne-Marne by helicopter, and that once that plan was nixed due to the rain, the journey to the cemetery — located less than 90 kilometres from downtown Paris — was deemed too logistically challenging to scramble together a motorcade for.

However, the wet weather didn’t stop Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron from showing up for their Remembrance Day commitments in and around Paris, prompting criticism of Trump.

Nicholas Soames, a U.K. Conservative Party MP and grandson of former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, took Trump to task for what he called the “pathetic” decision to cancel the planned visit.

They died with their face to the foe and that pathetic inadequate @realDonaldTrump couldn’t even defy the weather to pay his respects to The Fallen

Ben Rhodes, a former White House staffer who helped plan Trump’s predecessor Barack Obama’s state visits, tweeted that officials always set up a “rain option”, suggesting that Trump could’ve made the journey if he wanted to.

Ben Rhodes, @brhodes

I helped plan all of President Obama’s trips for 8 years. There is always a rain option. Always.

Two words: contingency plans.

Previous White Houses made them. https://twitter.com/jbarro/status/1061264416526737409

David Frum, a former speechwriter for former president George W. Bush, tweeted that a presidential motorcade could have made the journey from Trump’s hotel to the cemetery in an hour.

It's not even 60 miles from central Paris to the monument. If the weather is too wet & windy for helicopters, a presidential motorcade could drive the distance in an hour.

On site, presidential advance could easily erect a tent to protect the dignitaries (and the the presidential hair-do) from inclement weather

Democratic Rep. Don Beyer of Virginia tweeted, “Just imagine if President Obama sat out a Veterans Day ceremony because of the rain…”

Merkel and Macron mark the end of the First World War One one hundred years ago with a solemn ceremony in Compiegne. Trump decided not to go to a ceremony at a US cemetery near Paris because the weather is a bit rainy.

Kelly Magsamen, who served as a high-ranking official in the Pentagon’s Asian affairs division, chided Trump for his “real low energy” attitude.

She also shared a video of Trudeau speaking in pouring weather during an August 2017 commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the Dieppe raid during the Second World War.

Kelly Magsamen @kellymagsamen
Real low energy, @realDonaldTrump to not bother to honor the sacrifice of American soldiers in WWI due to some rain. Somehow everyone else was able to do so today. Obama never had this problem. He also visited our troops in war zones.

VoteVets.org, a political action committee set up by veterans of the Afghanistan and Iraq wars, slammed Trump for staying in his hotel “because of some rain.”

Donald Trump complained about having to stand in the rain, to speak about the massacre in Pittsburgh, because it messed his hair up (more).

Today, he will skip honoring fallen American heroes of WWI, and stay in his hotel room, because of some rain.

The cancellation of the cemetery visit means Trump’s next engagement will be to attend a dinner hosted by Macron on Saturday evening.

He is scheduled to visit the Suresnes American Cemetery and Memorial in Paris on Sunday.

Going to France and staying away from the most important event for the trip just because of the rain.

Perhaps this man and entourage are completely unaware of the weather conditions they may encounter for this visit to France.

DumbDeeDumbDumb as usual.

The Whitehouse did not say this.  The weather would hamper security for Trump. That is the real reason. France is a known area of Islamic radical terror.

Sometimes it’s better to just leave the talking heads to themselves.  Don’t both of those two clowns live in Canada and Uganda anyway?

When Obama was President there was  alternative for rain.

Why Trump didn’t use a motorcade.

Regarding security risk because of rain,  other world leaders was there... rite

Trump was the only World leader there.  The rest were national leaders.

My take, Trump did not want to inconvenience so many hard working French, as would have happened had he drove. Trump is a man of the people, unlike Obama, who was a man of the elites!😉

Trump is a rich arrogant elitist prick so he felt if he did not want to walk in damp air and soil his perfect yellow hair he does not have to. Rich people do not think of conscience anyone but consequences to themselves. Every other person went showing the people felt they had a duty to show respect.
