Reifer slams maiden ton

A spirited effort by the bowlers took Guyana Jaguars within sight of victory against Trinidad and Tobago’s Red Force when the third day’s play of the final round of the Cricket West Indies (CWI) Digicel Regional four-day championships concluded yesterday.

Despite an unbeaten 92 from Jason Mohammed, Trinidad and Tobago Red Force still require a further 123 to make Guyana Jaguars bat again, a task which seems almost unachievable at Providence against the steady Jaguars bowlers .
Leon Johnson switched his bowlers around to good effect and at stumps Red Force were staggering on 282-8, leaving the host to get two wickets for victory. Resuming on their overnight 462-7 with Raymond Reifer on 85 and Keemo Paul on 35, Jaguars declared before lunch on 540-9 to give Red Force an uphill task.
Reifer and Paul added a further 39 before Paul was lbw to leg spinner Imran Khan for 53 which included seven fours and two sixes. Reifer continued to accumulate his runs on both sides of the pitch and soon brought up his maiden first class century. He faced 217 balls and counted 10 fours, however Permaul’s dismissal caught at the wicket off Yannic Cariah for nine triggered the declaration with Jaguars enjoying a lead of 405; Reifer remained unbeaten on 108. Cariah finished with 3-91; Bryan Charles had 2-107 and Imran Khan 2-130.
Jaguars made early inroads into Red Force second innings as Gudakesh Motie removed Amir Jangoo for 16 before Permaul uprooted the stumps of Jeremy Solozano for 16 to leave the score on 43-2. However, Tino Webster and Mohammed steadied the chase fairly with a stand of 84 with positive stroke play. Webster slammed 11 fours and four sixes off 54 balls before he was taken off Permaul for 77. But Mohamed continued to gather his runs on both sides of the pitch and together with Denesh Ramdin put on 177 to further frustrate the home team. The duo batted with confidence and mixed aggression with defence as they rotated the strike nicely on a decent track.
With both Mohammed and Ramdin looking solid, Johnson re-introduced Sherfane Rutherford and his decision paid dividends as the medium pacer had Ramdin caught and bowled for 47. Ramdin’s dismissal triggered a collapse as Motie trapped Cariah lbw without scoring before Rutherford sent back Steven Katwaroo lbw for six leaving Red Force at 246-6.
Mohamed kept his composure and played some handsome drives and cuts, but this did not deter Jaguars as Johnson realising the possibility of a victory requested an extra half hour of play which was granted.
Paul, working up some decent pace, bowled Imran Khan for 17 with one that came back from outside off stump with the score on 269-7. Permaul then trapped Daniel St. Clair lbw for two in the final over of the day’s play. Rutherford has 2-21, Permaul 2-61, Motie 2-73 and Paul 2-88.
Play continues at 90:30 hrs today.
