NASA orbiter gives glimpse of moon's far side

(CNN) -- A NASA orbiter has beamed back its first images of the far side of the moon, including scenes of a massive crater caused by an ancient cosmic impact, the space agency announced Wednesday.

NASA released 30 seconds of video from one of the twin probes that arrived in lunar orbit on December 31 and January 1. The Ebb orbiter passed over the moon from its north to south poles, revealing a new view of the Mare Orientale, a 560-mile basin along the border between the near and far sides of the satellite.

Also visible was the smaller Drygalski crater near the lunar south pole, which has a star-shaped peak at its center from what NASA says was a comet or asteroid impact.

Ebb and sister ship Flow are part of the space agency's GRAIL program. For 82 days, their instruments will chart the lunar gravitational field, giving scientists a peek into what goes on beneath the surface -- and possibly an insight into how the Earth and its neighbors formed.

As for the "far side of the moon," as NASA says on its website, the time it takes the moon to make one rotation on its axis is the same amount of time it takes the moon to orbit around the Earth.

"So," NASA explains, "one 'side' of the moon is always facing the Earth, and the other 'side' is always facing away from the Earth.

This is the far side of the moon in stunning color. It almost looks earthlike, with marble landscape. One of our Republican contenders, Newt Gingrich is hoping to take up residence on the moon if the wins the nomination. I think D2 may find it interesting to follow suit.
I do no doubt you think that is the moon. Gingrich is also not wrong for wanting a permanent colony on the moon. It is necessary and we already have the technology to do so. The heavy lift machines are already being built per Obama. But you would not know that. You are more into fantasy

The rocks on the moon are almost the same as those on the earth. The moon may have broken away from the earth during some bing bang phenomena. Scientists have plans to mine the the moon for precious resources. It's going to happen soon. Lawmakers will be fitted with you set of tasks.... make inter-planetary laws to govern the use of space by space-faring nations. Hope India colonizes a part of the moon where it's rich in resources.

D2, I think you missed the irony in the post. The author of this post is implying that the continent of Africa is the dark side of the moon - with the emphasis on "the dark side". If the intention is to post a racist commentary using images then the author succeeded. [The humor is Newt Gingrich taking up residency in Senegal or Zaire.]

Moon rocks are indeed earth like minus the water and volatiles. There are also significant differences given their cosmic history.

The moon is a consequence of a collision of earth with a planetoid and not "a big bang phenomena". The term Big Bang is given to the standard model for the formation of the universe and describes a phenomena where space itself expanded from a singularity. Contrary to the commonly believed idea, it was not an explosion. Explosions expand into something. The big bang was the expansion of space itself.

The moon is for the taking. Treaties exist similar to those about Antarctica but all of that will be for naught as the claimants to it will be those who get there in cost effective ways. When they do, they will have abundant energy sources available since the regolith on the sun side of the moon is covered with helium 3, a great source for cheap energy millions of times in output to similar amounts of coal for example.

India is not remotely close to developing a heavy lift vehicle.

I doubt he is that smart since his racism is naked and ugly.Newt is not that ugly a racist despite his stupid mistakes.

I was referring to the poster's and not Newt's racism.

Having said that, I have to say that Newt is the guy who said Spanish is an inferior language; Obama is a food stamp President (code to the Appalachia); and other naked racist comments about Blacks.

So D2, Newt is ugly in his racism. not stupid. He knows what he says and thinks. The Guyanese guy that made the dark side post is just plain bigoted, and I hope for his redemption.
