“I want to welcome all of you who will be joining us in the two days of sporting activities, to ensure that we remember that while we celebrate we also have a very important task of developing our self and community,” Minister Sukhai said.
She also used the opportunity to wish the participants every success in the two days of activities.
Minister Anthony said that he was pleased with large number of participants that will be taking part in the events and noted that Government has over the years made much advancement in sports development.
“If you look around this country, will see the huge amount of resources being invested in developing sporting infrastructure, for example the Guyana National Stadium.”
He also informed the participants of some of the other investments by Government to develop sports including the Olympic size swimming pool at Liliendaal and the synthetic track at Leonora.
All of these facilities, he said are being built to meet international sporting standards “so that our athletes, while they are in training here, would be meeting those international standards,” Minister Anthony said.

Government, Minister Anthony said has taken a stern position in developing sporting infrastructure in Guyana and “while much is being done on the coast, Government has set aside $200M for development of sports grounds in all regions including the Hinterland”.
Minister Anthony also noted that Government will continue to work toward the development of more sporting activities in hinterland regions and one avenue through which this can be done is the Day of Interaction.

“When people think about sport, they sometimes only think about the physical benefits….in society while we get prosperous more and more people are not practicing sport and this is something that we have to change,” Minister Anthony said.
This thinking, he said is causing people to become obese and “putting themselves at risk of becoming unhealthy and having a shorter life”.
Minister Anthony said that sport is a unifying force that also helps to forge togetherness and strengthen social cohesion.
Amerindian Heritage month is observed in September and as usual several activities were planned. Among those that have already been held include, Exhibition and Reflections on the life of the first Amerindian Parliamentarian Stephen Campbell, Heritage Day and Heritage walk. The Miss Amerindian Heritage Month Pageant is slated for this evening.
