Rename the Ministry to Ministry of Tourism and the Environment.

Link the two.  Can't have good tourism without a clean environment.

Seriously, if the argument was that there was no need for another hotel because the market was saturated and that the only reason for its construction was that thieving can take place, who will buy the hotel?  The government might sell at fire sale rice, but it is the future income stream that is the main factor. The prime land it is on only becomes a factor if they do something else with the land.

I would buy it...give any investor the the same deal as they were offering the Chinese....8 million up front plus financing the rest and exclusive rights to the casino etc plus the mufti year tax exemptions...

Is the restriction that only foreigners or people with foreign passports can use the casino still apply? This seems not to be enforced at the Princess.

I see your adopted niece  has reportedly returned six vehicles to the Ministry of the Presidency, and is cooperating with investigations into the suspicious transfer of state assets into private hands.

the only thing scary is your habitual bigotry. The nation is already belly up...the coffers are dry. It is only by more debt can we dig ourselves out and hopefully it is not by asking the Chinese.

The PPP also killed every productive capacity we have. Rice is dead...sugar is dead and their saving grace of reaching out to Chinese money to fund boutique protects to fill their pockets at the expense of giving away our national nonrenewable resources in return.

We are not going back to a dictatorship but we can indeed cascade into a depression given what this administration has to deal with.

Mit,

You are still a naÃŊve' participant in Guyanese politics. If you read my posts over then years you would know by now that I've always spoken about the level of corruption in Guyana rather than argue about its non-existence. You will now have the opportunity to observe the competence and corrupted practices of coalition gov't. versus that of the previous gov't. Clear your mind of all prejudices and be impartial in judgment.

Stormy,

I am sorry to hear that you have not been called for a job in the new gov't. GNI loves you and we sincerely hope you continue your daily ramblings. It's  fun and at times nauseating. Keep the faith brother. The gov't. is coming under heavy criticism for hiring more ministers, vice presidents, and advisers costing the nation millions of dollars.

Did not know I was on anybody's short list. But then again...your way of thinking is not mind. One does not do a thing simply for expectations of rewarded but because it is the right thing to do. I also do not think I could work as part of any formal team. I have not worked as a member of any large group my entire life. I am definitely unfit for regimented labor.

I agree. The PPP used smoke and mirrors accounting, aside from their corruption. I think TK is right. I do not know if any govt. has explored alternative crops or giving / leasing the land to those involved in rice farming / canecutters to be used as farms. What about facilities to can fruits and so on. There has to be some alternative created to use the land and employ people. World supplies of food are getting scarce and we are sitting on tons of fertile land.

what's wrong with keeping the place clean

It is a matter of who should clean it, not a matter of whether it is to be kept clean. Look, several taxi cars park in front of my place during the day. My last task of the day, is collecting all the bottles, food boxes and other garbage. Several times I have asked them to use the small container I placed by the front gate, but to no avail.

Regarding the main issue of the thread, if sugar, rice and gold are dead, how is it that there was economic growth as reported by several reputable international agencies? What was spurring that growth?

Putting intellectuals to do hard physical labor and low jobs is the PNC's way of breaking in the comrades to the their way. It the responsibility of City Council to maintain proper sanitation at all times. Volunteerism to clean trenches is not the answer. tried before and failed. To repeat the same stupid things. It ain't gonna work.

A for sale sign on the newly build Marriott add to the already fearful economy and consumers confident. The same way you get a cheap laugh when people die, the same way you amused yourself when the country going backward. The newly built Marriott is feeling the wrath of curse before is was built. Granger is now depending on 2015 CPL to boost the economy on a PPP marvel. They should get rig of the stadium and make it into a pig pen or tillapia pond. He should send not-working bums in G/T to work and and pay taxes rather than sending them to thief, kill and riot. Guyana is slowly going back into a sinkhole.

Growth was due to gold, until recently, but mainly to construction and the retailo trade.  This reflective of remittances and the infamous "hidden" economy which Clive Thomas refers to.

Sugar remains in trouble, and rice farmers were bawling this year.

international agencies used the government stats. That is fudged. TK had a piece illustrating that.

Rice is dead because despite increase production, farmers are six month to a year behind in receiving payment. The government was using them in a rice for oil barter scheme and they were the last paid. Meanwhile oil brokers and shippers became mega rich. I need not explain sugar to you since by osmosis you should know that if it is at '73 levels of productive capacity and 19 billion in debt  cannot be good. Well gold itself is self explanatory. The PPP said in 2014 they had 800 million in reserve.  During this campaign they insisted it was 200 and made a fuss about others being ignorant of economics when they suggested hedging gold as a reason for the disappearing  600 million. Now we are told there is no money in the consolidated funds either.  With Petrocarbide funds broke, the national reserve broke, rice farmers owed why do you still doubt we are insolvent?

Amalia cannot be built on current plans ( whatever they are!). It is a waste of money and in the wrong place.
