‘Desi Girl’ in Guyana for launch of NTN Radio 89.1FM in Berbice
WENDY KHAN, popularly known as the ‘Desi Girl’, is in Guyana for the launch of the National Television Network (NTN). She has told this publication that her Bollywood CafÉ Radio Show attracts more than two million listeners worldwide!Since the launch of NTN’s 89.1 FM, ‘The Pulse of Guyana’, there has been no letting up; its personnel are quite boastful about it, and the company has since had the international voice of ‘Desi Girl’ Wendy Khan on the 89.1FM radio.
The Bollywood CafÉ Radio Show has several features highlighting Bollywood songs and local Caribbean musical artistes, bringing the East and West together.
In an exclusive interview with the Guyana Chronicle, Wendy Khan explained that it’s a privilege and honour to be asked by management to attend the launch of the television station in Berbice.
She explained: “I have been with NTN Radio since September 2013, that’s since they launched their radio station.” As she recounted her experience of just over a year, she explained that she is proud to have been able to entertain so many persons through this show.
She explained that her reach is Guyana, New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. Khan said: “I have a variety of audiences tuning in to listen to the show, where the coverage area is Guyana, New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. I also have an international audience that would stream the programme online.”
As a media personality, Khan has made numerous stage appearances, hosting concerts and events from Bollywood to New York, to South America and the Caribbean Islands. In 2009 and 2010, she acted in a musical/drama, “Off Broadway,” at the New Age Theatre in NYC, joining a huge cast of talented artistes in making history for the West Indian communities throughout the tri-state area as the first West Indian drama to hit NYC.
In 2011, “Desi Girl” made her debut on the television screen in Guyana with great success, and later went on to co-host the Kumar Sanu Concert in Guyana and Trinidad, aside from making a special appearance as a co-host for the 2013 Chutney Soca Monarch held in Trinidad in January 2013.
Speaking on the launch of the television station in Berbice, the ‘Desi Girl’ explained: “Being that I am part of the NTN media team, management felt that it would be nice for me to attend the television launch in Berbice, since I have a connection with the Guyanese people through my radio show.”
She noted that the launch is all about expanding and being able to bring more entertainment to the people; and she said: “I also want to be able to share this experience through my show.”
Khan noted that she has never done anything on the television for NTN, but she had this to say for her future with NTN: “why not! I can try my hand at it. NTN is one of the leading stations here in Guyana, and I see a brighter future for them.”
Khan explained that she is looking forward to the expansion of NTN, and “hopefully, in the future, they will be able to expand the radio as well in other areas.”
Khan is an acclaimed television and radio personality who has won numerous awards and recognition for Best TV Personality. She was also awarded the U.S. Congressional Award for Media, and the NYS Woman of Distinction Award for outstanding community services from the New York State.
