The Guyana Diaspora Gazette (GDG)group on Tuesday said it was concerned by the recent announcement by A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) of its withdrawal from a series of nationally televised public debates on Corruption in Guyana.

“We in the Diaspora have been paying keen attention to the evolving climate of interaction in our homeland and given our history we have viewed the introduction of these public debates as a significant advancement of our democracy and in holding public officials accountable for their actions irrespective of which side of the National Assembly they may sit” the GDG said.

It noted that over the past few months it was following closely the numerous public statements made by the APNU apart from other opposition political parties regarding issues of corruption in the Guyana Government.

“Based on these statements, several concerns were raised especially by intended remigrants and prospective investors in Guyana to the GDG group and we have been trying to ascertain the facts to provide as much clarity as possible to address those queries.
In view of this reality we are in a position of quandary to explain that the largest block in the Guyana opposition which leveled a number of serious charges of corruption has now abruptly refused to participate in a process which not only provides clarity on issues but offers them a chance to expose the corrupt dealings of which they claimed to have the evidence” the GDG said.

It noted that it is not only citizens of Guyana who have been caught off guard by this sudden U-turn by the APNU but those in the Diaspora who have keenly followed the debates which are streamed live on the internet by the broadcasting entity, NCN.

APNU on Monday announced that it was pulling out of the debate series on corruption hosted by the state TV NCN, citing a plot by the government and NCN’s failure to include several topics suggested by the party, as the main reasons for this pull out.

It's not the job of the opposition to safe the backside of the PPP regime. To take part in a discredited debate would be a waste of time. The regime does not listen to any advise that is not accomplished by bribes.

Problem for the opposition, they now need to substantiate some of the claims and from the previous debates, the Govt does have some valid points.  The Opposition should take part in the debates and call the Govt out.  In areas where there is a "meeting of minds", then put that to rest and focus on areas of concern.  I do believe there will be areas of contention but the opposition will have a lot of credibility and bring effective pressure on the Govt to improve transparency.

Don't be silly. The opposition had a forum to put its case to the public and it should have done so. Boycotting is not the way to go.

This proves that the opposition accusations of massive corruption in Guyana is unsubstantiated and merely political posturing as they can not provide evidence on a public forum. In fact it benefits the aPNU/AFC more to make unsubstantiated accusations in their mouth organ, Kaiteur and Stabroek rather than debating the allegations publicly.

Bai only a blind person would fail to see the wide spread corruption engolfing Guyana. From the bridges to the hotels: hydro project to netbooks: fast amount of money pouring into projects with little or no benefits to anyone except the PPP friends aka contractors.

The PPP also set up a drugs smuggling route to North America that has enriched even more PPP backers.

But of course, is not the police that is investigating. Dem get a pay rise to keep out of it. Instead the crooks want to debate the evidence. Is how stupid would you have to be to see it is a scam?

So again it is hearsay and perception rather than hard facts. To prevent corruption there must be checks and balances such as the procurement process and audits. However Guyana is such a small nation that any local would be liable to be involved in kickbacks as most of the players know each others. Govt has implemented procedures that tries to provide transparency however we all know that the branieacs in Guyana can circumvent the best of procedures.
