Did GECOM Chairman lie about serving as Grenada’s Chief Justice?

Oct 27, 2017 News, https://www.kaieteurnewsonline...nadas-chief-justice/

Newly appointed Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), retired Justice James Patterson, may need to publicly explain to the nation why there is no official confirmation to date that he served as Chief Justice of Grenada as stated on his official curriculum vitae (CV).

This was presented to President David Grainger and shared with Opposition Leader, Bharrat Jagdeo.

Numerous calls by Kaieteur News to the Chairman were not returned yesterday, a day after Jagdeo said that the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) was digging deeper into Patterson’s claims that he served as Chief Justice in 1987.

“There have been some serious concerns raised about whether justice Patterson was ever the Chief Justice of Grenada. Many people have called me about this matter and we are going to dig into it a bit more; we are going to try to confirm it because that is on his CV that I have received,” Jagdeo stated.

If it turns out that Justice Patterson indeed lied about his tenure as Chief Justice, it would be embarrassing for him and the Government, providing grounds for his possible resignation from the office since his hiring was based on false information provided to the President.

Granger had told the media at Patterson’s swearing-in that he has served as Chief Justice in Grenada. On Monday when asked about the brewing controversy, President Granger did not repeat the claim, but instead said Justice Patterson was a judge of the High Court of Guyana.

“His Curriculum Vitae is not a secret. You can examine it for yourself. He was a judge in Guyana; that’s important,” the President said.

Kaieteur News has also been unable to verify Justice Patterson’s Grenada claims although there are suggestions that he may have acted briefly in the post.

Records shared with Kaieteur News suggested that Justice Robert Archibald Nedd served as Chief Justice of Grenada from 1979 to 1986. He was succeeded by Sir Denis Byron who acted as Chief Justice until 1987 when Sir Samuel Horatio Graham was appointed substantive Chief Justice.

“All that we are hearing from individuals who work in Grenada, who were lawyers in Grenada during that period said they don’t know about (Patterson),’ Jagdeo noted.

The former President stated that if turns out to be untrue then Justice Patterson would immediately be disqualified as it would prevent him from acting impartially and with integrity at GECOM.

Ask Djangy bai. Maybe someday he might let us know that the man was once Prime Minister of Grenada. I'll keep an eye for this.

The man was Acting Chief Justice of Grenada,i post on GNI an article and the source from an old news paper that was printed in 1987.

I didn't do it to boost Patterson morale, samjhe.

here is what KN says.

The way I look at this matter, PPP should stop wasting time and energy on whether Patterson put CJ instead of Acting CJ on his CV. The most important issue by far is why Granger rejected Jagdeo's three lists. In every list there was at least ONE NAME that could have been picked out of six names. I already mentioned Chris Ram in List #1 and Joe Singh in list #3 in previous posts. But Granger argued that ALL SIX must be "not unacceptable" to him. The PPP's legal team should do the research and try to prove in court that Granger misinterpreted the Constitution. I think they can do it successfully even if it reaches the CCJ.

If applying for a job and you lied on your application, would you still get the job? I don't think so. Granger is a military man, I don't think he seek legal advise to make his decision. This will be a long drawn out process in the courts, hopefully it will get a fair trial.

Patterson lied.he should be disqualified. Or if he can't remember, then he is not "fit and proper".

Where in the Constitution this is stipulated?

What is your interpretation of " fit and proper"?? Someone to be in sound mind and body.

If you can .show proof of  the constitution  then don't discredit my statement. I forgot you would have difficulty showing the fact. Looks like the PNC are giving you instructions to defend their incompetence.

I am not here to educate you. Your points are moot. The PPP embraced this constitution and now it's coming back to bite them in their butt.

Oh, how quickly Gilly's friends turn their backs on him. Between Oct 20 and today I notice how Mits and Django have changed their chorus. I wonder who called them up and threatened a good spanking on their derriere.

The struggle resumes for free and fair elections.

Where have we seen this before? This dictator has to be stopped now.

Gilly,  I am joining you.

Gilly, I am totally in agreement with you,let Democracy prevail,Granger made a bad move,I am with the people for Free and Fair Elections.

Once again it appears the Forces are pulling the strings that created Dictatorship.

Mits, let us assume that the PPP embraced the constitution, they NEVER unilaterally appointed a GECOM chairman nor did they violate the spirit of the Carter accord.

The point is, BOTH the PPP and PNC love the Burnham constitution but the AFC/PNC wants to use it for rigging purposes.

That's the difference.

The PNC was also in a non cooperation mode while in opposition.

Guyanese from both major races need to hold hands and demand constitutional reform but the most pressing issue right now is that Granger is acting like a dictator.

You either stand on the wrong side of history and defend AFC/PNC or you stand on the right side of history and condemn the Granger's action.

We need to stay focused on the real issues at THIS moment. The choice is totally up to you where you want to sand and how you will be judged.

I know where Brother Gil stands and right now he is on the right side of history and will be judged as such. I am also pleased to see Cain and a few others taking a non partisan stand on this matter and condeming Granger's actions.

I agree that Jagdeo is not popular with many who are opposed to his rule and style of leadership and I agree that he cannot be the PPP Presidential candidate for 2020 but we must stand up and do the right thing in condemning this dictatorial move by Granger.

Brother Gil,

Cain is still around and has demonstrated class in speaking out and doing so wisely at the correct moment.

Mits has to realize that no one is asking them to run into the arms of the PPP but decent minded folks are asking for free and fair elections in Guyana.

I will respect the results in 2020 as long as the elections are deemed as free and fair by international observers like the OAS and Carter Centre. I am going as far a saying that the PPP stands to lose if Jagdeo runs as President for a third time.

Don't buy into the hype peddled by the slop can crew. You have no clue about the popularity of jagdeo in Guyana. I don't expect him to run, but there are no other viable candidates, if they are then they should step forward now and let their voices be heard. We might as well keep the current cabal of jackasses in power if we go back to the same old ppp that wants to perpetuate failed sugar and be soft on crime, pavement vendors, squatters etc.

I think so too. It will play into the hands of APNU+AFC who will make Jagdeo the "bogeyman" in their election campaign, driving fear into voters' minds and diverting attention from the Coalition's wrongdoings.

The PPP will need to campaign on the themes of APNU+AFC's broken promises, their deception, their high-handedness, their militarization of senior public service positions, their running of an expensive super-salaried bureaucracy, etc.

For that, the PPP must put forward someone other than Jagdeo. There are two eligible fellows but I won't name them now. It's so easy to stain people's characters and impute negative traits on them in this forum.

Joe Singh will stay out of party politics, as far as I know. Good for him.
