Waramadong has retained their status as the best in Region 7 when they trounced Bartica 6-0 yesterday afternoon in the Regional Final of this year’s Digicel Nationwide Schools Championship at the Ministry of Education ground. A brace of goals each from Reon McNaughton and second half substitute Devon Nathan carried the Regional Champs to their second 6-0 win in as many matches having hammered Paruima on Sunday last at the Waramadong Community Centre ground. It was yet another no nonsense day for the Waramadong boys who were watched by Minister of Social Cohesion, Dr. George Norton, MP, Digicel Head of Marketing Jacquline James and former CEO, Gregory Dean. From as early as the 9th minute the Region 7 kings took command when Whitaker Paul fired his shot past Bartica’s custodian Dariq James who had an outstanding match despite his team going down. Were it not for the heroics of James, the scoreline would have certainly been much wider. Soon after taking the lead, goal number two followed thanks to Colin Edwards’ 13th minute strike. From thereon in, the many fans in the ground supporting Waramadong began calculating how many goals the match would end by given their teams’ dominance and control. McNaughton then took proceedings into his own hands by firing in the next two goals in the 22nd and 37th minutes as his side went into the half time break comfortably ahead 4-0 as they began making plans mentally, for their national playoff match against Region 3 champions, Uitvlugt tomorrow at Leonora. After the resumption, both teams made full uses of the five subs that were available but while Bartica’s did bring some potency to their defence, James still had to bring off some beautiful saves to keep the scoreline down. But he was not able to keep the substitute out of the scoring mix as he hit the back of the nets in the 56th and 78th minute to see his side to another convincing 6-0 triumph. The champs were presented with a new set of Digicel branded uniforms by Digicel Head of Marketing Ms Jacquline James. They will now play Uitvlugt tomorrow at Leonora from 15:00hrs. A large crowd is anticipated to witness this potentially fierce encounter.
