Digicel Schools’ Football Championships… Waramadong blank Uitvlugt to earn quarter final date with Sir Leon tomorrow

Waramadong’s unblemished run in this year’s edition of the Digicel Schools’ Football Championships continued yesterday at the Leonora Track and Field Facility when they clinically dispatched of home team Uitvlugt 2-0 urged by their usual vociferous fans.

Easily the best posse of faithful supporters who travel by the dozens to the various venues, the Waramadong support team is playing to lend valuable support to their team, and did not go away disappointed as the Region 7 Regional champs put away the Uitvlugt boys in style.
The composure and football IQ of Waramadong was miles ahead of the Uitvlugt team and they did not waste time in stamping their authority against the timid looking home team. In just the 3rd minute of the match, Uitvlugt’s Romario Bacchus handled the ball from a throw in just outside the box on the arc and the well positioned Referee, Gladwin Johnson had no alternative but to blow for the infringement as he awarded the free kick.
A high level of confidence swept through the Waramadong team as they sensed that the position and distance of the kick presented a golden opportunity for them to take the lead and that is what they did.
Reon McNaughton, who netted a brace in their 6-0 win against Bartica on Friday last, was the man entrusted with the shot and he did not disappoint as his shot was so powerful that custodian, Denzil Smith could only parry the ball into the nets, his choice not to try and grasp the ball owing to the power of the shot.
Thereafter, the Region 7 boys continued to control proceedings and despite Uitvlugt being the speedier of the two sides apart from enjoying height advantage, they were clearly a few steps behind the Waramadong team.
Uitvlugt through, created a few chances but lacked the awareness and ability to finish whenever they entered the attacking third. They {Uitvlugt} were able to shut down quite a few attempts by their rivals in their quest to increase the lead.
In the second half, Uitvlugt came out with more purpose and displayed a greater desire to make it right up front but were again guilty of being blown for abusing the offside rule. Waramadong on the other hand always looked threatening whenever they picked up the ball in the opposition half and put the game beyond doubt when Colin Edwards received a timely pass, turned and coolly patted the ball past Smith in the 78th minute to knock the little wind that was left out of the sails of the home team.
The win for the Region 7 kings of Digicel schools football earned them a return match with Sir Leon whom had defeated them in last year’s quarter final in a ding dong battle at the Bartica Community ground which was affected by persistent rainfall.
Tomorrow’s clash at Leonora from 15:30hrs presents an ideal opportunity for revenge as well as another chance for the Sir Leon boys to prove that last year’s win was no fluke.
