Disappointed with the President’s forestry “giveaway”

May 14, 2016 | By | Filed Under Letters

Dear Editor,

Allow me this space to express my total dissatisfaction with recent moves by His Excellency Mr. David Granger (President). At the recent signing of the most recent Climate Change Agreement in the U.S.A which was attended by the President, he proceeded to give away (allocate) two million hectares of our forest which adds up to 10% of our Forests.
Firstly, this is in direct contradiction to what they were preaching against while in opposition. The PPP was accused of giving away almost all of our forest when it was President Hoyte who initiated this process by granting millions of hectares of our forest to foreigners before 1992. After careful investigation it was discovered that the relevant agencies were not consulted on this move. This action by the President can only be described as “Ad hoc and Knee-Jerking!”
Bear in mind that the “International Funding Community” is no longer giving additional funding towards “Climate Change Project.” The only benefit we will enjoy is that of the PPP initiated Norway Agreement. My questions are (1), what are the benefits toward the country and Guyanese from this agreement (2), what consultation and procedures were followed with regards to the Forest Management Guidelines, the Opposition, Parliament, stakeholders etc. It is clear from my investigation, that none of these agencies were consulted beforehand.
I am requesting that the media seek to clarify answers to these questions and publish same ASP as this seems to be another “disastrous expedition” in which the President” behaves as though he owns the forest. We all know that Guyanese own the forest.

Joseph Noel does not understand the issue. President Granger is not giving away Guyana's forest. No private company or foreign government will own it and profit from such ownership. What President Granger has done is to set aside a portion of the rain forest for conservation. This means no large-scale and rapacious mining and logging there. President Desmond Hoyte had started the process in 1989 at the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting by pledging the Iwokrama area. Presidents Jagan and Jagdeo sustained Iwokrama, to their credit. No private profiteering company owns Iwokrama.

Setting aside is the same as giving away carbon credits for free.  Apparently you are not well versed in this area of discussion.
