In an advertisement in the daily newspapers, GPL announced that once your electricity is disconnected, you will have to clear your outstanding bill, pay a $3,200 reconnection fee and also pay an increased security deposit which will be equivalent to six times the average of your monthly electricity bill.

The Guyana Power and Light company has announced that it will be increasing the charges for reconnection for the new year.

In an advertisement in the daily newspapers, GPL announced that once your electricity is disconnected, you will have to clear your outstanding bill, pay a $3,200 reconnection fee and also pay an increased security deposit which will be equivalent to six times the average of your monthly electricity bill.

The company said once customers pay their bills on time, they will avoid disconnection and will ensure a brighter new year for all.

For the past few years, GPL has failed to improve its electricity supply and cut back substantially on line losses despite several promises. Additionally, the company has been receiving tax payers money to assist in its operations although it charges some of the highest electricity rates in this part of the world.

A new board was recently installed at the power company.

Many problems in this area, people steal electricity because of unemployment or underemployment, pensioners subsidy got eliminated, businesses steal electricity, workers who try to get a raise by trying to get you to pay them to slow down the meters, electricity bills going out late. Poor line maintenance, poor response to complaints. And this is their response? They are very inefficient and ineffective in carrying out their mandate.

It was a business before. The Canadians had to cut and run.

For Guyana, GPL has the wrong business model. I have told the PPP that. And have indicated to Granger as well. And as far back as i992, I told CBJ that at Ramada business luncheon.

I agree with you that GPL has the wrong business model. Both PPP and the current regime comes here in the diaspora with great pretence to listen to our concerns and expert advice as if they care. All they care about is to be fed and walk away with your donations. No more business luncheon  for me nor money from me.
