A bandoned moments after his unfortunate death, the body of a premature baby was brusquely dragged out of a public hospital and dismembered by a stray dog.

Monday morning was supposed to be a special moment for the expecting mother who was rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre on the East Bank of Demerara (EBD) to deliver her baby.

The woman, whose profile was not disclosed to this publication, gave birth to a feeble infant, severely underweight at just 22 weeks.

Due to the premature birth, the baby succumbed to organ failure just minutes after being born. Health authorities who spoke to Guyana Times alleged that the distraught mother wanted nothing to do with the dead child and told hospital staff to take care of his disposal.

It is assumed that hospital staff was negligent and improperly disposed of the corpse within the building, which led to a stray dog wandered in and making a meal of the dead infant.

The badly damaged body was later discovered in the hospital’s compound.

Sources explained that it remains uncertain exactly what transpired after the baby died and before the infant’s body was discovered lying on the cold concrete in the hospital’s compound.

“A mother went in Monday, tek in to deliver and she was 22 weeks pregnant, so however, the baby wouldn’t ah live. She give birth to the baby and the baby died at the hospital. Because it’s a premature baby, it couldn’t ah survive so the baby die. So after the baby die, she didn’t want the baby to take anywhere so the baby remained in the custody of the hospital and as such, the hospital is supposed to dispose of the carcass properly. Which they did not do.

They just throw it down anyhow, and the dog came in the hospital and started to eat it and the dog eat its head off. I don’t know exactly where they put the dead baby. But after the dog eat its head off, it drag the body in front of the hospital,” a source revealed, noting that was all the information he had on the incident.

Meanwhile, attempts to garner a comment from the Hospital’s administration and the Public Health Minister proved futile.

Somebody should be fired for this blunder. And the Head of the hospital should be called in to the Minister office for a good lecture. Likewise the maternity staff needs to have a stern lecture

Imagine this is your wife gave birth to your first son, and due to hospital negligence, the child died. Your poor wife is sad and confused and tell the staff to take care of that loving child because she can't afford to bury the remain. The unprofessional nurse took that infant and throw it like a piece of meat and fed it to a dog. How could you watch that dog strip your stillborn child to pieces? Loosing a child is hard enough much less to see how his remain was consumed. How can this mother relates this graphic experience with her other sibling? For you to quite understand, you have to put yourself in that position to feel the pain and suffering of a mother experience from a hospital that was supposed to treat you with kindness. Instead, you face death in the most traumatic way. Remember this Guyana. If you want to dead quicker, go to the hospital.

Following recent reports of a foetus being mutilated at the Diamond Hospital, Minister of Public Health Dr George Norton has attributed the incident to negligence and stated that the responsible party will likely be sanctioned.

In a press release from the Ministry of Public Health, it was stated that there is an established protocol for the disposal of biohazardous waste, the terms of which were not adhered to.

It is customary that such waste be transferred to Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), where disposal is done, and though arrangements involving such were said to have been made between Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr Shamdeo Persaud and Chief Executive Officer of the GPHC Allan Johnson, instructions to transfer the foetus were not adhered to.

According to reports reaching the minister, the mother delivered on Sunday morning around 6’o’clock, but declared that she did not want the foetus.

Contrary to media reports, Norton related to Stabroek News that information he received indicated that on Monday, the foetus was placed in a garbage bin and that bin later taken to a site outside the hospital, where a dog was able to access it.

It was previously reported by the Guyana Times that the foetus was improperly disposed of inside the building, and a stray dog gained access to the institution, where it dismembered the body, the remains of which were said to have been discovered in the hospital compound. Norton denied this, stating that dogs would not be able to get inside the hospital. Furthermore, he said, the lower half of the body was discovered in the bin.

Regardless of how the body came to be in that state, however, the minister asserted that carelessness was the cause.

“… Somebody was negligent, somebody was not doing what they were supposed to do.

Persons are denying it but we’re investigating,” he stated during an interview, adding “It is scandalous and we will do everything for it not to happen again.”

He also stated that the doctor who assisted in delivery as well as the accompanying nurse would have to give an account of what transpired.

The foetus was less than 24 weeks old at the time of delivery and had it lived to full term, would have been the sixth child of its mother, who is 26 years old.

I wonder who is telling the truth.

On another note, >>had it lived to full term, would have been the sixth child of its mother, who is 26 years old.

Wow, what kind of life would this woman really have , 6 children at 26 years. Why do these families want to have so many children, I guess the defending answer is that the husband wants it.
