Donald Trump’s son breaks the law by tweeting picture of his ballot paper while voting for his dad

Yahoo News UK,

Eric Trump has broken US law by tweeting a photo of his completed ballot paper after voting for his father.

The second son of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump tweeted a photo of a ballot with the oval over his father’s name filled in to his 562,000 followers.

His tweet read: “It is an incredible honour to vote for my father! He will do such a great job for the U.S.A!”

However, Trump Jr later deleted the tweet after he was alerted to the fact that an 1890 New York law bans voters from showing marked election ballots to others.

It is illegal to not only share a photo of a complete ballot, but also to indicate how a person cast their vote.

A federal judge last week ruled that this also applies to social media posts.

Steve Vladeck, professor of law at the University of Texas School of Law, told CNN: that the tweet was “an important reminder of just how antiquated these laws are – and how much they vary from one state to the next.”

Eric Trump is not the first person to get into trouble in this election for breaking voting laws.

Earlier this month, singer Justin Timberlake took a selfie in a voting booth in Memphis, Tennessee, while trying to encourage people to vote.

A Tennessee law that came into effect in January which took effect in bans residents “from using the device for telephone conversations, recording, or taking photographs or videos while inside the polling place”.
