Dear Mr. Editor,
Re: Retraction of the Kaieteur News’ front page lie.
Sensationally, on your front page in today’s paper you have in a whole banner stated “HUMAN SERVICES MINISTRY HALTS PUBLIC ASSISTANCE FOR DISABLED WOMAN.” In your page 18 story your newspaper claims that the public assistance of differently abled Ms Balkissoon was cut off by the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security.
You claim to be quoting from her brother and citing him as the source for your fictitious story.
Your entire story is a lie.
Ms Balkissoon received her public assistance for July to December in July 2011.
It is irresponsible and reckless of you to have simply printed what you claim to have been told now forcing the Ministry to disclose that this poor woman did indeed receive a book of vouchers. If your claim is true, that is, that you were so told by her brother, then by causing us to disclose this you may have just placed the existence and happiness of this poor woman in jeopardy. As has been our experience she may well not have disclosed to her brother that she was receiving said assistance. Many recipients deliberately do not disclose their successful application to their family members as those members abuse them and bully them for their money.
In any event you should make yourself aware of the law and understand that the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security does not allow or disallow public assistance. This is done according to law by a Local Board of Guardians. Please see attached for a simplified statement as to how the public assistance system operates.
I would expect you to do the decent thing and print a retraction of your blatant and proven lie, as aforesaid, in a place that receives as much attention and prominence as your lie in today’s paper.
