Did the statement above not speak directly to a system of beliefs native to a people and not remotely about blood? Culture is what we have. It a system that imprints identity, the sense of belonging and geographical location in the world. It seldom changes and persists over long periods.

We unfortunately do not get to choose what culture or ethnicity we are born into. We become imprinted on the religion, language, motes of dress food and above all the company of kind. It is not about beef or mutton but an ancestral legacy, the historical narrative of peoplehood that causes us to be called by some label or another. The right of people to their culture is sacrosanct.

I am an atheist and I remain Amerind and if your relative changed religion it is highly unlikely that she will have changed culture since her food and manner of speech etc would be the same. I have two daughters born in India who grew up catholic and a son whose mother is African American and baptist and none of them possess any life knowledge about being Amerind. I am hopeful that all of them will love who they are and are comfortable in their own skin

Indian culture in GUyana is a synthetic one, some 20 discrete cultures coming together to create a new one out of their common experience. It's building block is of Indian but not from India. It was created there by the mainly dalit peoples to a casteless system that is not typical of India but in some sense an improvement on it.

African peoples of Guyana are also a distinct people and there is not erasing of that since it is strongly imprinted on them as well
