Dr Karen Cummings replaces Debra Backer – Basil Williams new Deputy Speaker
The two posts left vacant following the resignation of A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) Member of Parliament (MP), Debra Backer have been filled. Dr. Karen Cummings was this evening sworn in by the Clerk of the National Assembly, Sherlock Isaacs as Backer’s replacement while Basil Williams was chosen to be Deputy Speaker.
Backer, an MP since 1997, was an APNU front bencher, as well as the Deputy Speaker. She recently resigned due to health reasons.
Cummings comes with considerable expertise in medicine that will more than compensate for the void that Backer’s resignation created, Leader of the Opposition David Granger said.
Prime Minister Samuel Hinds, who as well joined in welcoming the new MP, said that Government looks forward to her contribution in the House for the benefit of all Guyana. He also expressed regret at Backer’s resignation.
APNU’s front bencher Williams was nominated for the Deputy Speaker position by Opposition Chief Whip Amna Ally, and seconded by APNU’s Rupert Roopnarine. Backer had held that position since 2011.
In light of Backer’s absence, there were also some movement in terms of placement in the Opposition side of the House, APNU’s Shadow Minister of Local Government Ronald Bulkan is now occupying Backer’s front bench spot whilst Jaipaul Sharma will now occupy the seat that was previously held by Bulkan.
