I understand that leading AFC member Dr Veerasammy Ramayya has accepted a coalition government appointment as Regional Executive Officer of Region 6/East Berbice-Corentyne. A few weeks ago Dr Ramayya had publicly criticized the AFC leadership of not doing enough for its members since the May 11 election. The leadership and the doctor have mended fences, as the new appointment indicates. Social activist Mark Benschop says he phoned Dr Ramayya who confirmed his acceptance of the top job in Berbice. I congratulate REO Dr Ramayya on his appointment and wish him a successful tour of duty.

[www.inewsguyana.com] â€“ Alliance For Change (AFC) Member, Dr Veersammy Ramayya has been named as the new Regional Executive Officer (REO) for Region Six – East Berbice/Corentyne – and says he plans to address infrastructural work that was done in a substandard manner under the former People’s Progressive Party/Civic administration.

Ramayya had recently revealed his intentions to resign from the AFC after he was not offered a post that best suits his capabilities in the APNU+AFC government.

During a telephone interview with iNews on Thursday, September 03, Ramayya confirmed that he will be taking up the post on Monday, September 07, replacing Paul Ramrattan, who served in the capacity for several years under the PPP.

“As of now I am the one appointed by Government as REOâ€Ķthey realized that I am an assetâ€Ķthey know my input and they came up with this solution,” Dr Ramayya told iNews.

He says he is satisfied with this position since “the package is far more lucrative than what I was previously offered.” Dr Ramayya believes that his input is invaluable noting that “if it wasn’t for me, the APNU+AFC would not have (been in office) today.”

The AFC member indicated that he received his letter of appointment from the Office of the Prime Minister, where he had declined to take up a post when the coalition ascended to government.

He stated that the previous job offered to him would have effectively seen him working as a “Liaison Officer” to the Prime Minister where he would be required to “take calls and record complaints and then report back to the Prime Minister.”

Ramayya told iNews that although he had signaled his intention to resign from the AFC, he did not follow through with it after thinking the issue through.

Meanwhile, the AFC member also explained to iNews that among his priority objectives would be to ensure that any works being done in the Region are up to standard and the government’s monies are not being wasted due to works executed in a poor manner.

“All the substandard work I will have to look intoâ€Ķthe infrastructural work at all the NDCs are very very poor,” Dr Ramayya told iNews.

Through his association with a Swedish Doctor, Dr. Sebastian in Florida, he was able to take up studies in Ayurvedic Medicine. It was through this that Dr. Ramayya became involved in herbal medicine. “I started to look at alternative forms [of medicine] for my ailments—and with so many sicknesses today, the herbs are working and I took a lot of crash courses, and Diplomas in Physical Therapy”.'
