Editor Who Wrote of Racism in Cuba Loses His Post, Colleagues Say

MEXICO CITY — The editor of a publishing house in Cuba who wrote a critical article in The New York Times opinion section about persistent racial inequality on the island, something revolutionaries proudly say has lessened, has been removed from his post, associates said on Friday.

The author, Roberto Zurbano, in an article published March 23, described a long history of racial discrimination against blacks on the island and said “racial exclusion continued after Cuba became independent in 1902, and a half century of revolution since 1959 has been unable to overcome it.”

On Friday, The Havana Times blog reported that Mr. Zurbano had told a gathering of Afro-Cuban advocates that he had been dismissed from his post at the publishing house of the Casa de las Americas cultural center, leaving the implication that the dismissal was connected to the article. Other associates said Mr. Zurbano told them he had been removed but would continue working there.

Reached by telephone in Havana, Mr. Zurbano would not comment on his employment. “What is The New York Times going to do about it?” he asked. He angrily condemned the editors of the opinion section for a change in the headline that he felt had distorted his theme.

The article’s headline, which was translated from Spanish, was “For Blacks in Cuba, the Revolution Hasn’t Begun,” but Mr. Zurbano said that in his version it had been “Not Yet Finished.”

“They changed the headline without consulting me,” he said. “It was a huge failure of ethics and of professionalism.”

Eileen Murphy, a spokeswoman for The Times, said the editor stood by the article’s preparation.

“We worked very hard to ensure that the wording in the piece was translated properly and accurately reflected the writer’s point of view,” she said in a statement. “There were numerous versions of the piece sent back and forth, and in the end, Mr. Zurbano and our contact for him (who speaks fluent English) signed off on the final version.”

“We knew,” she added, “that Mr. Zurbano was in a sensitive situation, and we are saddened if he has indeed been fired or otherwise faced persecution, but we stand by our translation and editing, which was entirely along normal channels.”

Cuba reported its population in a 2002 census as 65 percent white, 25 percent mixed race and 10 percent black, according to the C.I.A. World Factbook, but demographers outside the island — and Mr. Zurbano in his article — have said the black population has been undercounted.

A major tenet of the revolution has been leveling the playing field for all Cubans, and its defenders point to racism that was a striking feature of the country before 1959, but also to what they say are many black doctors, scientists and intellectuals.

Mr. Zurbano wrote in his article that Cubans have a strong safety net of housing, education and health care but that most blacks had been left behind by recent economic advances, a topic that is taboo to discuss.

“To question the extent of racial progress was tantamount to a counterrevolutionary act,” he wrote. “This made it almost impossible to point out the obvious: racism is alive and well.”

If that was the case in Guyana it will put everyone who speak of inequality out of commission. Our parliamentary politicians are speaking in racial tone every day and there is no motion to sanction them. Our shadow minister said that cooolie sugar workers belong to the PPP and they can suck salt. Granger said cooolies are rapists and murderers and they're still on the job. That is high class freedom of expression.

Of course there is racism in Cuba as there is everywhere. So, stating the obvious in a foreign newspaper to embarrass your own country is wrong.  There are black doctors and scientist in Cuba, situation which didn't exist before 1959 when Cuba was an American brothel. Cuba is migrating back to capitalism, the widening social gap has more to do with the crookiness of a few rather than discrimination. How many whites in Cuba are poor? Many. This is the same story across Latin America. Mostly those with friends in wealthy countries are the rich ones.

On the other hand, if the guy is able to publish in the New York Time he will no need the tiny salary he gets in Cuba. So stop crying for that post.

If people think Cuba is so racist now under the present Castro administration then we will see what racism really is in Cuba when the Castros are no longer in power which will be soon and the Florida crowd returns to Cuba. I hope Caribj will be around to witness it.

The same will happen to any one on GINA or NCN who writes about racism against blacks in Guyana.

How will it change?  They do not get good jobs and are harrassed by the cops, so ifr that continues then how is it worse?

As of now Cuba is a WHITE dictatorship which harrasses a majority non white nation.

And there were black doctors in Cuba before 1959.  Their 1953 census indicated that 15% of the doctors were black or mulatto, with 25% of the population being these categories.  Now about a 1/3 are when blacks and mulattos are now 50%.  Do not see much change.

Show me how many blacks are in leadership positions in Cuba.  Hell they cant even get a job driving a taxi because in Cuba TAXI DRIVERS EARN MORE THAN DOCTORS!!!!

So really being a doctor in Cuba means NOTHING!

Well I do know that the PPP said that AfroGuyanese are criminals and rapists a sthis was published in The Chronicle, a PPP controlled entity.

Now can you tell us when Granger said that Indians were rapists. I do know he said that not all the criminals or rapists in Guyana are black.

You need to examine YOUR OWN RACISM as you paint a picture damning blacks a sbeing a scourge on Guyana.

So a black Cuban must flee to the USA where he is FREE to write about racism against blacks.  Something that he isnt allowed to do in Cuba.

Racism against blacks exists even in Guyana... who is using that fact to undermine the Guyanese government?

I understand Caribny's position.  His African brother Fulgencio Batista was overthrown by a white man name Castro. It does not matter if Castro gives each black Afican person 24 ounces of gold each he would still be considered a racist against African people by the likes of Caribny. You have to understand that is Caribny's African brother Fulgencio Batista that got overthrown there by a white man.  This type of thinking is absent in the minds of many East Indians who cannot seem to find enough other East Indians to hate and fight against.  It would be a good thing when people like the Bookmen and the Churchills of this world learn from Caribny and his love of his people.

This is no way a defence of the Castro brothers who allowed very few blacks into ministerial positions in Cuba.

Racism against blacks exists ESPECIALLY in Guyana, and as in Cuba, any black person who states this, is harrassed by the govt, which perpetuates racism, but wishes to pretend otherwise.  Guyana is much like Cuba in this regard.

This is exactly your defense of teh Castro racist dictatorship, just as you defend the Ramotar racist dictatorship.

Calling Batista blacks is like calling Rohee black.  They are both mixed race people who are deeply ashamed of their African heritage.
