Once polling place close, they release figures...it does not matter time difference...

They can't wait until West Coast or Hawaii close...they'll be up whole night and one of the candidates might have already accumulated the 270 necessary...

They already know how some states will vote...once the close ones (mostly east coast) go to one candidate or another, people would already know who win..or will win

Ray, individual State Projections are released after Poll close, that is correct. But remember it is only a projection.

projections are based on raw numbers that the network gets from Board of elections in each state...those numbers end up being certified by the Sec of the State once they are all tallied

How you think the networks can give you actual numbers as the count goes on?

Why do they start releasing figures even though some polling stations in some states have not yet closed because of time difference   will that not influence others when they are going to vote

The media did mess up in 2000 when they called Florida for Gore and the polls were still open in Florida.  They have learned from that.

BTW Florida did prove in 2000 that elections can be rigged in the good ole USA.

I was of the impression that the Networks based their Projections on Exit interviews of Voters.

Those are exit polls but since FL they very careful eith that

You are right, polls are released as the precincts closed and the numbers are tallied. This is different from projections, which are made based on exit polls. Sometimes the media get ahead of themselves.

I was in Hawaii two months ago and had a long discussion with a local who is a school teacher. He said that the country cannot wait on them for they are already 6 hrs behind and their  votes do not really make a big difference.

Nowadays projections are not made until they get raw numbers after polls close...no more projections based on exit polls...

1. The general approach is to release results of the polls in locations when they are available for that time zone.

2.Where the polls are still open, results of the already published areas are blocked until their closed time.

3. Hence, people in the blocked areas do not see the results until their specific time period.

The process is the same as in Canada. This information is based on my personal experience as an individual intimately involved with the process where I am recognized as the designated representative of the candidate by the election officials .

1. In each voting office there are individuals who are specifically named by the candidate(s) offices. These individuals cannot in any way interfere with any person who are voting or with the election officials.

2. The representative for each candidate are in a specific area where they observe what is going on in the specific office.

3. When the time for the election is over, those representatives must leave the premises.

4. About fifteen minutes before the closing time, specific individuals for each candidate enter the area and give the official documents identifying them as the respective representative's official officer to view the process of the ballot boxes and its proceedings.

5. These representatives observe carefully the sealing of each ballot box and that everything proceed according to the official procedure.

6. Results are then presented on a specific notice board with the votes for each candidate.

7. The official representatives can then record the results and immediately leave the office.

8. At this time the official representatives generally telephone the results to their respective offices for recording and return quickly to the office.

9. In this way each office can get the results to keep a running tally as the numbers for each candidate. Note ... These numbers are considered as estimates until officially announced by the election offices.

10. The office for each candidate can then get an indication whether they are clearly ahead - win- or in certain cases extremely close until the final results are announced.
