Indian TV news anchor fired after calling Xi Jinping 'Eleven'

UK GUARDIAN, SEPTEMBER 18 ---

An Indian TV news anchor has been sacked after she referred to the Chinese president, Xi Jinping, as Eleven Jinping, apparently confusing Xi's name with the Roman numerals XI, a senior official at the state television channel said on Friday.

Xi left India on Friday after a visit to boost trade and economic ties that have been marred by a longstanding border dispute. The blooper occurred on Doordarshan News on Wednesday.

"It is an unpardonable mistake," the official said. "We have debarred her from newsreading for a few months."

The official said the anchor had been employed on a casual basis, after a shortage of newsreaders forced the channel to run some news bulletins with casuals.

The incident comes at a time when Doordarshan News is trying to reinvent itself to compete with private broadcasters. Its programmes are often a matter of public ridicule for their poor production quality.

The gaffe led to a wave of sarcastic comments on social media. "The silver lining: at least the anchor knows Roman numerals," @kanikagahlaut posted on Twitter.

Thankfully, no lashes. I picked up Roman numerals quickly. Our alarm clock at home had Roman numerals. My mother taught me to read the time before the teacher brought up Roman numerals. Also, the big wall clock at Uitvlugt railway station had Roman numerals.

The good thing about Roman numerals is that we didn't have to add, subtract, multiply or divide them. We were required merely to understand them.

As I mentioned, I learned Roman numerals quickly and loved to decipher them. Some movies had their production year stated in Roman numerals. I was quick to sort them out.

Incidentally, when I started my working life I bought a Roman numerals wrist watch with my first pay.

The way I look at it is this way.  That guy may really be Jinping the 11th or 11 Jinping.  There is no difference between the Chinese Communist Party and the Imperial Royal Court of China.  They are both based on imperial Chinese land expansion. That is why they both have/had land disputes with every Asian nation.  In fact  Mao Zedong refered to the  Xuantong Emperor Puyi the 1st as his predecessor.  So this guy may be  Jinping the 11th or 11 Jinping.  Take your pick or I should say take your royal pick.
