Former magistrate Chandra Sohan was yesterday taken into custody at the Springlands Magistrate’s Court for allegedly attempting to pervert the course of justice in the preliminary inquiry (PI) into the murder of Number 70 Village carpenter Faiyaz Narinedatt.

Sohan, an attorney at law, was arrested yesterday midday and up to press time, there was no word of him being released on bail. According to police sources, they were awaiting word from officials in Georgetown on how to proceed.

The case, which involves US-based Guyanese Marcus Brian Bisram, who had fled the country shortly after the murder and was recently arrested in America, has grabbed the nation’s attention.

Five other men, including Bisram’s bodyguard, were charged with the murder. Bisram, police have alleged, procured and commanded Orlando Dickie, Radesh Motie, Diodath Datt, Harri Paul Parsram, and Niran Yacoob to murder Narinedatt between October 31 and November 1, 2016, at Number 70 Village, Berbice.

When the PI continued at the Springlands Magistrate Court yesterday, one of the witnesses who was expected to testify fell ill and could not do so.

The witness, who had been hospitalized for some time after he was allegedly poisoned, was present in court for the morning session. However, as they day went by, the 16-year-old began to feel weak and his relatives took him away.

After several small breaks the court was finally adjourned and the PI was set to continue today with several other witnesses testifying.

Meanwhile, according to a source, Sohan was apparently representing a witness and as such, had attended previous court sessions. However, a police source told Stabroek News that orders were given to keep a keen eye on Sohan’s actions during yesterday’s proceedings.

State Prosecutor Stacy Goodings, who replaced Police Prosecutor ASP Stephen Telford, told the court yesterday that Sohan had no authority in the   proceedings.

The accused’s attorney, Sanjeev Datadin, then argued that witnesses have a right to seek their own legal representation. However, after the court broke for a five-minute recess, Sohan was placed in custody and told of the charge.

Meanwhile, Narinedatt’s relatives, including his parents and son were present at the court yesterday with placards insisting that they will continue to stand strong until they receive justice. However, it was the relatives of the accused men who filled the court yesterday, as a large group was present for the proceedings.

In November 2016, Narinedatt’s lifeless body was discovered on the Number 70 Public Road. Bisram, the alleged mastermind, was arrested in Queens, New York on July 4 and remains behind bars pursuant to a complaint warrant issued by Magistrate Judge James C Francis IV on June 16. Arguments in the extradition trial are set to commence on August 7.

So what did Sohan really do?

Waiting to spill the beans.

Attorney-at-law Sohan was arrested for obstruction of justice. He was not on file as the defense attorney, and he was persuading two of the witnesses to lie. Money talk, bullshit walk.

This is unhealthy

Bisram's mother and sistrer were recently arrested for attempting to bribe the Police in Guyana

Now an attorney!

shame on him

We have an many pandits and so called community leaders who were in his backpocket and are still attempting to paint a humane picture of this Cretan

It is a shame that money buys morality, decency and now it seems as though he is trying to subvert justice

We must identify the cracks in the moral wall in our society

Prince, are witnesses not entitled to legal representation?

Yes, but such agreement should be done outside of the court that he's representing Tom, Dick and Harry. Isn't it? BTW, I never witness a court case in Guyana or see what court looks like.

These journalists or reporters seem to always have something to hide when reporting a story. Either they are not equip to report clearly and concisely or they are just a pack of POOHARS who put in their own twist in an unskilled and unsophisticated manner.

I worked in the courts. It's not uncommon for lawyers to attend the courts looking for work or to listen to high profile case as this one.

I agree with you.

bisram's vast wealth is not being spared to get him off the hook. this is not the first time his money is being doled out to pervert the course of justice. millions were offered to police officers to suppress the case. now a former magistrate appears in the net. more to come. i have to praise those principled berbicians who are not only alert but also refuse to sell their conscience. faiyaz family must get full justice.

Reforming you takes times, but we're getting there.

Salutations to these principled Berbicians.

After all the masquerading antics over this case, Narinedatt’s family and relative will get justice. After Bisram money magic runs out, he will be begging for donations. The same as Ed Ahmed, his money comes easy by looting poor people, and it went just as easy by handing out lavishly and paid high end to attorneys to put his ass in jail. If Bisram had worked for his money, he would know the value of a dollar than to use it to corrupt the people of a corrupted society. When he can no longer dish out lavishly, the tide will turn against him. Bisram run all night until day light caught up with him.

Your hero, Ed is a thief. He embezzled money from people that made minimum wage to build his empire and handing out donations to religious organizations. The thing that piss me off the most is when he frigg up cricket and leave balls hanging when thieving money runs out. If his money sweetened you, it didn't move me one bit. What I know, you don't know. Ed and Bisram belong to one jail cell, so Bubba can visit them together.

BTW, I stop in at Good Hope yesterday. It's nice but lonely. I hope it picked later so beer price can come down.

During the course of a proceeding against a person who does not have legal representation, a lawyer can seek the judge/magistrate attention that s/he is representing the said person as a "friend of the court".

The proceedings can then continue and based on the extent of the matter, it can reach a resolution or can be postponed for the lawyer to discuss the matter in private and then appear in the court at a later date.

They did it nice, I went there saturday for Fry Rice and cha Chi Kai Chicken, the place was pack with the usual suspects.

The place is too upscale. I was afraid to sit on the chair. I like it when it was run down like rum shop style. On a crowded day, I wouldn't be able to recognize "wire".
