Ex-soldier arrested for impersonating Police officer

A 20-year-old New Amsterdam man has been taken into police custody on Saturday evening for reportedly impersonation a police officer.

The man has reportedly been claiming that he is in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at the Springlands Police Station and was at the time off-duty in New Amsterdam.

Asked his rank in the CID, the man allegedly said it was “CID”. The police were accordingly informed, and the suspect was arrested. He then allegedly stated that he was a soldier. Senior officers of the Guyana Defence Force were then summoned to the Central Police Station in New Amsterdam after the suspect was not identified by officers of the army’s Second Infantry Battalion.

The man then claimed that he was employed with the Coast Guard. When officers from that division examined his identification, it was discovered that he had served as a reserve and was not at the time a serving member of the Guyana Defence Force.

The GDF has since distanced itself from this individual, and has said his name does not appear on its payroll. The GDF is also keeping out of police investigation of this individual because it will not encourage anyone to tarnish the image of the Force.

The suspect remains in custody as police investigations continue.
