The Flying Aces Cycling Club (FACC) of New Amsterdam is set to host a road race that will be in honour of Emancipation and retiring Assistant Commissioner of Police and former Commander of B Division Ian Amsterdam, the 40-mile event is set for this Sunday. Sponsorship has been garnered from a number of business persons in Berbice and members of the Guyana Police Force, the race will be for Berbician riders only. Yesterday, popular businesswoman and long serving member, supporter and cycling fan Pearl Arokium presented a cheque to race Organiser, Randolph Roberts. Race time is 10:00hrs from the junction of Main and Alexander Street in New Amsterdam and will see competitors proceeding to University of Guyana Tain Campus before returning to starting line for the finish. Prizes will go to the top 5 finishers, the first 3 juveniles; first 2 females while there will be six sprint prizes for the taking. Before the start of the race, cyclists will cruise around the town in honour of retiring Commander, Amsterdam. They will also do a rolling start from Main and Alexander Streets, proceed to Philadelphia Street, Republic Road, Tacama Turn, Stanleytown Public Road and back to New Amsterdam before heading up the Corentyne. Mr. Amsterdam will be on hand to send the cyclists off and will also assist with the presentation of prizes.
