Guyana’s Minister of Natural Resources, Raphael Trotman’s brother-in-law is currently acting as Attorney General of Grenada and favours have allegedly been requested to help out the brother of Public Infrastructure Minister, David Patterson, who recently pleaded guilty to trafficking cocaine.
Forty-seven year old Guyanese, Derrick Patterson Thursday afternoon pleaded guilty in a Grenada court to cocaine trafficking. Patterson’s brother was in possession of 2.325 kilogrammes of cocaine with a street value of 232,500 Eastern Caribbean dollars (approximately US$86,000 / GY$17,983,000).
However, he was only fined $75,000 Eastern Caribbean dollars (approximately US$27,752 / GY$5,789,000).
Notably, the current acting Attorney General of Grenada is Lawrence Joseph, who is married to the sister of Trotman. Further, Trotman’s sister was the Solicitor General of Grenada.
This publication understands that the issue of Patterson’s brother has been up for discussion among those officials.
Commentators are questioning whether executive influence was already at play given that Patterson’s brother, despite being nabbed with such a large amount of narcotics, was only fined a fraction of the value of the cocaine he was trafficking.
