FINALLY: THE PALESTINIAN FLAG HOISTED AT UNESCO HQ

The Palestinian flag flies for the first time next to the UNESCO flag in Paris,

December 13, 2011.The Palestinian flag has been raised at the headquarters of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for the first time, Press TV reports.

Acting Palestinian Authority (PA) chief Mahmoud Abbas, who attended the event in Paris on Tuesday, said that joining the UNESCO has been “an important step for Palestinians.”

In addition, Abbas said in a press conference after the ceremony that Israel has to “stop its settlement activities in the occupied West Bank.”

The PA chief added that there should be “peace in the Gaza Strip and the whole occupied territories.”

On October 31, the UNESCO voted strongly in favor of membership for Palestinians. Of the 173 members voting, 107 were in favor, 14 opposed and 52 abstained from vote.

The United States and Israel opposed the move. Washington announced it would cut funding to the UN organization.

The UNESCO is the first United Nations agency that Palestinians have joined since they submitted their bid for full membership at the UN to the Security Council in September.

FINALLY: THE PALESTINIAN FLAG HOISTED AT UNESCO HQ

'Resistance key to freeing Palestine'
Wed Dec 14, 2011

Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh has described resistance as the only way to liberate Palestinian lands from Israeli occupation.

Addressing tens of thousands of Palestinians gathered in Gaza City to mark Hamas' 24th foundation anniversary, Haniyeh said on Wednesday that the only remaining option for the liberation of occupied Palestinian territories is resistance since other ways, including negotiations, have failed.

''We affirm that resistance is our strategic option and the only way to liberate our land, from the sea to the river. God willing, Hamas will lead the people ... to the uprising until we liberate Palestine, all of Palestine," Haniyeh said.

The Hamas Prime Minister also described reconciliation among Palestinian factions and the prisoner exchange deal with Israel, under which 1,050 Palestinians were released from Tel Aviv jails in return for Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, as two great victories for Palestinians achieved through resistance.

"The issue of prisoners' exchange was a political and security battle with the enemy in which we won by making Israel bowing to the will of Palestinian people," Haniyeh said.

He also described Hamas movement as the strongest part of Palestine that has stood against political isolation and the years-long Israeli siege. Haniyeh also described Gaza and Hamas as a source of inspiration for the Arab Spring.

Hamas, the democratically elected ruler of Gaza, was founded on December 14, 1987, shortly after the beginning of the first intifada, or uprising, against Israel's illegal occupation of Palestinian lands.

I am for a Palestinian homeland per the 6 7 borders and for a right to return of their people. I however believe UNESCO has ruined its ability to support the educational and health needs of millions of needy kids the world over by its forcing of the US hand.

Who will now fill the lack of funds lost with the US defunding this organization? This org should not be a political tool. They should not have sacrificed the worlds needy for political ends. I do hope they can get the funding from Arab states to meet the US shortfall or the organization is dead.

I sympathize with the Palestinians but the Palestinians are not the only people with needs in the world. We have our own in Guyana where new arrivals from elsewhere; Indians and blacks, push them to the margins in their home world and now use democratic majorities to redefine the lands they are to possess. Do you stand up for our Amerinds at home where you are the new Israeli to them?

My point here is not to what the US want or what the Palestinians want but to what is necessary, a functioning UNESCO. Suffocating that org on the back of one cause is quite stupid for its members especially when they sit on their hands unable to fill the void they create.

Palestinians are a bunch of idiots, but even idiots need their own state and every village needs one.
I hope when they get they get their state, they don't kill off one another, and the estate awards the exstate back to the Israelies.
