Benn restates concern country ‘faces trial by fire’ as section of Eve Leary gutted

Home Affairs Minister Robeson Benn today again invoked his concern that the country was facing a “trial by fire” as a large section of a building in the Eve Leary Police complex was gutted by blaze just weeks after the main Brickdam station was consumed in an inferno.
There is so far no word about cause of today’s fire which destroyed the part of the building where some police ranks are housed along with the Police Office of Professional Responsibility.
Speaking to reporters at the scene, Benn said that it appears that a “subliminal” message being circulated in the country and started by a “pyrotechnic-minded” person in the US may be and more than likely behind the incidents and the timings of these fires.
He said one of these messages was that “Georgetown will bun if the PPP don’t do whatever”.
Benn vowed that the government would “stand firm” against any destabilization and would ensure works continue in line with the development agenda. He said all of the relevant services will have to be more vigilant.
Commissioner of Police (ag) Nigel Hoppie told reporters that the first fire call was received just after 1 pm.
He said that all files from the Chambers of the Director of Public Prosecutions, which had come under threat from the fire, had successfully been removed.
Hoppie said contingencies are in place to deal with any police files that might have been obliterated in the fire. A large number of files were also lost in the Brickdam blaze.

Major losses were on Saturday avoided after quick response from the Guyana Fire Service resulted in the fire at the Guyana Police Force’s Office for Professional Responsibility (OPR) being brought under control. This resulted in the saving of Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) which is housed in the same building in Eve Leary.
Prime Minister (Ret’d) Brigadier Hon. Mark Phillips, M.P., Minister of Home Affairs, Hon. Robeson Benn, M.P. and Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Governance, Hon. Gail Teixeira M.P., along with several other ministers of government were on the ground.
The Prime Minister in addressing the media said, “we have been able to save the DPP part of the building. So, the fire service is doing their work and you do not expect, based on what we are seeing here, for the fire to spread beyond where it is right now.”
He further added that “the investigation will help us to determine whether it is coincidental or if there is some other motive or reason behind this fire. So, we need to allow the fire service and the police and law enforcement agencies to do their work… the important thing right now is that we have the fire under control, not likely to spread beyond this point and the investigation into what may be the cause of the fire has started.”
Minister Benn said that the fire has placed the operations of the OPR and DPP in disarray. The minister said he believes that Guyana is experiencing a “trial by fire.”
“It appears that a subliminal message is being put around the areas starting from some fire-technic minded person in the United States and maybe, perhaps much more than likely that the incidents we see and the timings at which they occur are related to those more than subliminal messages about Georgetown burning if the PPP do not do whatever,” Minister Benn said.
“We will stand firm here; we will make sure that the work of our government and the development of our country proceeds,” he stated.
Commissioner of Police (ag), Nigel Hoppie in an interview disclosed that despite the loss of documents in the OPR, the force has always had a backup in place.
“We always have contingency systems in place but of course, any fire initially would affect us going forward but together as a team, we will put systems in place to ensure that it does not hamper our progress in addressing the issues at hand… most, if not all the cases have connections to several divisions also because as you are aware, we have decentralised Office of Professional Responsibility, that is in every region throughout our country,” he stated.
Chief Fire Officer, Kalamadeen Edoo said the fire service received the call about the fire at 13:50hrs which saw fire tenders from the Central, Campbellville, Alberttown and West Ruimveldt fire stations responding to the scene. The building which was under fire housed OPR, the Office of the DPP, Police Headquarters Barracks and the construction section of the force.

Benn ,let there be an Investigation instead pointing fingers at others for your incompetence. Your government is destabilizing the Guyana Police Force.

It makes no sense that one can down load and post not being able to copy and paste. All of the Papers here allow one to copy and paste, even Stabroek allows it. Guess I will have to boycott Kaiteur News.

Cops being questioned in relation to inferno at Eve Leary – Fire Chief
Ranks of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) who occupied the living quarters at Eve Leary, Kingston, Georgetown, are now being questioned in relation to the massive fire that destroyed the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) office on Saturday.
This was confirmed by Fire Chief Kalamadeen Edoo on Sunday.
“These are Police ranks who were staying in the barrack room, the living quarters upstairs. Those are the persons who are being questioned in relation to the fire,” he said. When asked if the origin of the fire has been determined, Edoo said investigations are still ongoing to determine the origin.
“Investigations are still ongoing within the Guyana Fire Service (GFS), and the Guyana Police Force (GPF)…within a week or so you will get a full update as to everything surrounding the fire.”
The blaze on Saturday destroyed the Police Force’s Office for Professional Responsibility (OPR) and there was minimal damage to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
It is still unclear if a temporary building will be used for the DPP but according to Minister of Home Affairs Robeson Benn, the files are being safely stored at the Police Training Centre at Eve Leary.
The GFS said they received a call at 13:50h alerting to a fire at the location. Water Tenders from the Central, Alberttown, West Ruimveldt and Campbellville Fire Stations were immediately dispatched to the scene.
The fire is reported to have begun on the top floor of the western side of the building, in an area that is used as the living quarters for ranks of the GPF. It subsequently spread to other parts of the building due to the age and combustibility of the structure and its contents.
As a result of the fire, the entire living quarters, the OPR, the Construction Department, and Stores were completely destroyed, while the Office of the Department of Public Prosecutions suffered minor water damage.
A vendor who was not too far away from where the fire started, told the media that they heard loud explosions coming from the building, and sometime later, smoke was seen emanating from the OPR’s building.
Was prisoner Greene in the barracks? You know the one who took a piece of wire with a wick lit it and pushed it expertly to start the Brickdam fire?
