180 workers retrenched by Barama due to market slowdown

By Dhanash Ramroop On September 6, 2016 @ 2:25 am In Local News

Approximately 180 workers have been retrenched by Barama Company Limited, according to General Manager Mohindra Chand, who says that a drastic slowdown in the market is largely to blame but the government’s protracted review of the company’s contract for renewal has also contributed.

The Malaysian-owned company has been laying off workers since July, Chand said. “They have been going in phases and in total it has been approximately 180 persons that have been laid off from different departments across the board,” Chand told Stabroek News yesterday.

So world trade market conditions are bad, and it is the fault of the Guyanese government? Like there is not one intelligent PPP economist around! No wonder they spend so so many decades thieving.

So why is Rwanda and India (a nation of over a billion) growing at 7.4%?

Why are Venezuela, Brazil,  and Suriname in a recession and Guyana not?

India's growth is largely due to its large domestic markets and its growing middle class.  Rwanda because of its rapidly growing tourism, and ICT sectors.

When Guyana's economy gets as bad as Venezuela and Brazil, the PPP can come back and tell we that our economy is imploding. The fact of the matter is that Guyana has one of the strongest economies in South America right now. Compared that to where Guyana was under the PPP.

The best we can hope for is for Jackass Granger not to do any harm while he squat in office acting like a ceremonial president rather than a man with a plan to move the nation forward.

So what is the private sector going to do in the mean time? Wait for the government to find new markets for them? That's not how business works.  Governments set in place the conditions for taxes, import duties, health and safety provisions, and employment laws. It is not up to the government to go and sell rice or plantain to other countries. That's for the private sector.

Suddenly you remember that Guyana has a private sector? During PPP time you held them responsible for development.

How can private sector move forward when Granger et al have shown that they are anti business? In fact they killed off projects that would make investing more lucrative, ie Amelia falls etc.

The private sector under the PPP was mainly involved in the exporting of drugs hidden in fish, pepper, etc. How the hell can you expect me to applaud such actions by your buddies under the PPP? Now that the drugs exports have come under the spotlight the private sector is experiencing a downturn. Granger has already given them a couple of ideas for further development as a business plan. It's now down to the private sector to switch from cultivating and exporting cocaine and ganja, into cultivating and exporting other produce.

Is this a fact or are you blowing smoke again to excuse Jackass Granger? You PNC supporters should be holding them a higher standard rather than settling for mediocrity.

It's fact. It's thought at business school as well. You street vendors turned big time drug dealers under the PPP can't use your phone to call a friend in government any more. So now you want Granger to do your dirty work.
