First All-Female Crew Lands Plane In Saudi Arabia - But Can’t Drive Home From The Airport

Touching down on the dusty tarmac, Captain Sharifah Czarena Surainy and senior first officers, Sariana Nordin and Dk Nadiah Pg Khashiem, couldn’t help but smile. They had just made history after becoming Royal Brunei’s first female flight crew, piloting a Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

But despite being deemed capable of landing the largest plane in the airline’s fleet, the trailblazing women weren’t able to drive themselves from the airport. That’s because they landed in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, a country where it is actually illegal for women to drive.

There’s no doubt the milestone to mark Brunei’s National Day, celebrating the country’s independence, was an achievement to be celebrated, but it does throw up the absurdity that the crew, once grounded would have risked arrest if they attempted to drive themselves.

Although there is no official law in Saudi Arabia banning women from driving, women cannot apply for driving licences and they could be arrested if found behind the wheel.

The landmark flight comes three years after Captain Sharifa Czarena Surainy became the first female captain of a flag carrier in Southeast Asia.

Speaking to the Brunei Times at the time, she said of her appointment: “Being a pilot, people normally see it as being a male dominant occupation. As a woman, a Bruneian woman, it is such a great achievement. It’s really showing the younger generation or the girls especially that whatever they dream of, they can achieve it”

While driving remains forbidden for women in Saudi Arabia, it’s female population are making strides towards equality in other areas. Last year, women were allowed to stand in elections for the first time ever, and they were able to vote.

So who knows one day the all-female crew who just bossed an entire plane might have the option of taking something other than an Uber home from the airport. Baby steps and all that.

I wish the women could fine and put those men in jail for humanitarian reasons. Matter of the Earth is feminine such as a car and plane and fuel and men should not take priority in governing them. If I am in Saudi Arabia I know they will put me in jail or behead me, especially for my website, so it is my right to have a weapon so I can kill them first to protect my honor. Why can't the world court or Interpol straighten those misguided predators out?

One time I went to the Guyana Consulate and asked them if I can join the army in Guyana--I was down and out with life. I think they said I had to be a citizen but I have dual citizenship with Guyana and America. I don't know if I was diagnosed with schizophrenia then already.

I had my annual psychiatric evaluation today (March 16, 2016) with Dr. Sharma. I asked her if she could see my feelings and she said no, which I expected although I didn't believe her. I admire psychiatrists because they don't judge one's persona in a demeaning way. All my psychiatrists appeared to be kind and patient with my illness.

The only way she would be able to see your feelings would be if you were to...ahem....stand out/up.

Ahem, I want her to say she sees my soul as feelings to identify her and not my sexual feelings although you may have a point that my soul may be sexual. Any way people Cain posting...stand out/up, I believe means an erection. I appreciate the humor. Hopefully the women wouldn't be offended.

Great!!  God bless them.  Women are being deprived of their ability to to perform and progress.  Hopefully, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Afghanistan and others will realize that women can contribute to the development of a Country!!!
