The Florida /Guyana Hope Foundation none profit Charity Organisation proved that they are not only masters of charity work and giving hope to the needy, but also good at recreational and sporting activities. The organisation, which is made up mostly of Guyanese residents in Florida, USA, put away their charity baskets as they took on a Corriverton United Cricket team in a feature 18 overs softball cricket match which they won by three runs. The organisation which has a Guyanese chapter the Guyana /Florida Hope organisation teamed up with the Regal Stationery and Computer Centre and Steveβs Jewelry in the all-important cricket venture. The game, which was played at the Crabwood Creek Sports Complex, saw a reasonable size crowd including Minister of National Security Khemraj Ramjattan among other dignitaries in attendance. The game turned out to be a thriller with fortunes fluctuating until the final delivery, in the 13 a side encounter. Winning the toss and taking first strike the Hope Foundation select team scored 161-9 with Eric Thomas hammering 42(4Γ6), Mahendra Arjune 33 and Eon Abel 25. Bowling for Corriverton James Hart with 4 and Sherwin Murray 3 were the main wicket takers. Corriverton in reply lost some early wickets but rallied to end on 158 in the 18 overs to lose by 3 runs. With 12 needed in the last over being bowled by Thomas, the host managed to score nine. Their fight was led by Vibert Dan with a swashbuckling unbeaten 45(6Γ6), whilst Hart contributed 30(2Γ6, 3Γ4). Bowling for Hope Foundation Mahendra Hardyal led the way with 3, while David Harper snared 2 wickets. . At the end of the game the beautiful Florida /Guyana Hope Trophy was presented to the winning captain Anthony Dhannie by Minister of National Security Khemraj Ramjattan. Corriverton United and Man of the match Eric Thomas also received trophies. Among those giving speeches at the activity which they all praised a worthwhile venture include Minister Ramjattan, President of the Florida / Guyana chapter Mohamed Yassin, President of the Guyana/ Florida chapter George Baijnauth and the winning Captain Anthony Dhannie. The members usually get together and accrue resources which they send to Guyana to assist those in need. The Florida based team participates in the South Florida Softball Cricket League organized Florida Cup with reasonable success. This is their fourth return to Guyana and apart from donating millions of dollars they have shipped over 40 wheel chairs and 20 walking aids among other items. They are also assisting a number of Childrenβs Homes with supplies. The coordinators were George Baijnauth and Carmen Ally. (Samuel Whyte)
