GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC) – The Guyana government Wednesday announced that it had granted the Jamaica-based airline, Fly Jamaica Airways, the green light to operate two routes out of the Cheddi Jagan International Airport.
Government spokesman Dr Roger Luncheon told a news conference that Cabinet gave the approval on Tuesday and that the airline would service the Guyana — New York route and the Georgetown —Toronto routes.
Luncheon said the approval was granted after standard evaluative procedures were completed by the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCCA) and the recommendation to Cabinet by Transport Minister Robeson Benn.
"The application to operate was with us for some time, as the due process was being discharged by GCAA…a bond of forty million was the sum required and which Fly Jamaica, I would posited as one of the requirement for licensing in Guyana," Luncheon said.
Fly Jamaica Airways is a partnership between Guyanese-born chief executive officer, Captain Paul Ronald Reece, and Jamaican shareholders, including chief operating officer, Captain Lloyd Tai and the manager of In-Flight Services, Christine Steele.
The Company was incorporated in Jamaica on September 7, 2011 and started with a Boeing 757 aircraft.
“We faced a rigorous start-up process, including meeting national and international requirements. Through the stewardship of our experienced management and dedication of our amazing employees, we proved to aviation regulators that we have what it takes to be a world-class airline.”
Fly Jamaica Airways has also satisfied rigorous requirements for the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Department of Transportation (DOT), and Transportation and Security Administration (TSA), in order to operate as a commercial US-registered carrier.
