First Lady Sandra Granger congratulated students of the Success Elementary School’s graduating class of 2015 for their outstanding performances at the recently concluded National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA), along with those of Grades One to Five.
The First Lady thanked the parents, relatives and friends who assisted in the students’ achievements.
Delivering the Charge to the students, at the National Cultural Center today, the First Lady quoted the school’s motto “Excellence through Effort and Enjoyment” and said that the students excelled because of their dedication to their studies.
Mrs Granger expressed the hope that the successful students had enjoyed “every bit of knowledge” they had absorbed, as once the learning process is enjoyed, “it becomes a lovely life changing experience”.
Guyana needs dedicated, educated people the First Lady stressed and the nation’s youths, “are the hope of our country”. With more than 50% of the country’s population below the age of 24, she stated that it was saddening that most of them are jobless and have stopped looking for work or are unable to do so for a myriad of reasons. She added that the fact that many youths are illiterate and innumerate makes the success of the graduands more remarkable, and must be commended.
Students were advised to use technology to communicate effectively and be cognisant of the world around them, and “be aware of the vast opportunities for growth and development”. She described Guyana as a blessed country with abundant natural resources, but one that is in need of development across a wide range of sectors. This would only be possible if the vacancies in the various sectors were filled, she emphasised.
“I have recited a litany of careers so that you, the Grade Six achievers can be aware of the vast scope for your growth and development. The world is your oyster. You can do and become anything you want to be and you’ll get there by focusing on your education,” the First Lady encouraged.
The Success Elementary School copped several of the top spots at the 2015 NGSA, with Solomon Cherai securing the number one position with a whopping 530 marks, only 5 short of the total target mark. Cherai was followed by his classmate, Shania Eastman, who copped the second position with a total of 529 marks. Sixth position went to their class mate Afeefah London for gaining 525 marks.
Giving the report of the school, for the period September 2015 to July 2015, Principal Eleanor Shivmangal reminded parents of the need for punctuality with regards to their wards, particularly since school begins at 08:00hrs. Parents were also urged to play a greater role in their children’s work at home, and ensure that they are also well disciplined as this seems to be growing challenge.
The Success Elementary School was formally launched in 2010, on September 6 and has a student body of 962 with 60 staffers. The institution has consistently produced several of the nation’s top performing academic students since it conception.
