At least 1 person is reported dead and 30 arrested in San Felix, located in Bolivar State, Venezuela following riots today over food supplies.
El Universal reports that a supermarket was looted in San Felix by a group of people who queued up outside the store to buy supplies. During the incident, a man called Gustavo Patiñis was shot in the chest. He was standing some 50 meters from the supermarket.
At first, witnesses fingered officers of the Bolivarian National Guard for the murder of the man. However, a commander of the officers denied these accusations, and demanded an investigation into the incident. So far, 30 people have been arrested.
As a result of widespread shortages, Venezuelans have been forced to search for food, wait in lines for hours and sometimes settle without having certain basic products.
BolÍvar is one of the 23 states into which Venezuela is divided and has borders with Guyana and neighbouring Brazil.
