I.) Madras Presidency under the Administration of the East India Company

Madras Presidency was established as an administrative unit of East India Company rule in (1652) 1684. By 1801 it roughly reached the territorial extent it was to maintain for over a century. In 1845 Trankebar (Tranquebar) was annexed, when Britain purchased Danish India.

II.) Madras Presidency part of British India

In 1858 the E.I.C. assets were transferred to the British government. In 1936 Ganjam District and half of Visagapatam District were split off Madras Presidency and merged with newly-formed Orissa Province. In 1953 the Telugu-speaking parts of Madras State were split off, and constituted as Andhra State. In 1956 Malabar District was annexed by newly-formed Kerala State, the South Kanara District and Coorg by Mysore State. In 1969, Madras State was renamed Tamil Nadu.
