Former Army Chief Gary Best is criss-crossing the country for the Coalition as a candidate for Monday’s general elections, his Attorney James Bond said on Friday, as the Police seek to charge him for the death of national cyclist Jude Bentley.
The 41-year-old national cyclist was killed on the East Coast Highway three weeks ago; he was training when he was struck down by a Land Cruiser driven by Best.
The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) had on Thursday advised the Police to charge Best for causing death by dangerous driving, but up to Friday, no charges were laid.
Regional Commander, Assistant Commissioner Edgar Thomas, said he was unable to charge Best on Friday.
“The matter has not yet been filed in the court. I would locate (him) maybe by Tuesday morning. I didn’t get to execute what I had to execute today.
“For reasons known to me, I didn’t get to file the case this morning,” Thomas said when he was contacted by the News Room.
When asked why he was not able to file the charge, Thomas said: “No, I wouldn’t be able to say why.”
Just after the February 8, 2020 accident, Best has said he would suspend campaigning for APNU+AFC, but his attorney Friday said he was in the fields working for the Coalition.
“Mr Best is criss-crossing the country on a special assignment,” Bond stated.
“We are not aware that he is being sought after by the Police,” Bond added.
Mr Bond would not say where specifically Best is; he would only say that he is travelling the “length and breadth” of Guyana.
“Mr Best, as most people know is a Candidate for the APNU/AFC and has a lot of assignments,” he stated. But he said Best is “cooperating” and would face the charge.
Best was initially taken into custody but was released on $100,000 station bail. He was found to be way above the alcohol limit at the time of the accident.
