Former Cricket Umpire Tulsi Kumar passes away

Tulsi Ranjit Kumar also known as Umpire Kumar or TR of Groenveldt Pasture has died at the age of 86. Umpire Kumar, who was born in Leonora Estate in Guyana in 1931, died in New York on Friday November 10, 2017. He had lived in Leonora until 1977, after which he migrated with his family to the U.S.

Umpire Kumar worked in the Guyana Civil Service for many years, most of which were in the Ministry of Labor as a Senior Labor Officer.

He is more well-known and regarded for his service to local and national cricket in Guyana, to which he dedicated a greater part of his social and community life. He played cricket for Leonora and for many years, promoted and organized cricket matches in Leonora, West Demerara and other parts of Guyana. He was instrumental in the 1960s in the development of the West Demerara Cavaliers cricket team and promoted cricket tours to a few Caribbean islands. He also served as a cricket umpire for many years in Leonora and West Demerara, was a National Umpire in many national cricket matches for Guyana, and trained several cricket umpires in West Demerara.

He was successful in the international cricket umpire’s exam at the Lord’s cricket ground in England. In 2001, he was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his Distinguished Contribution in the field of Cricket and Umpiring by the Leonora Reunion Committee in New York.
