Chattergoon freed on sex charge after offering victim money
Narine Chattergoon, called ‘Ken’, 49, the former senior government official who was embroiled in a number of sexual
issues was charged, and placed before the courts on a matter of exposing his genitals, had his matter dismissed after he reportedly offered the victim money.
Chattergoon, of Bath, West Coast Berbice, who was before Magistrate Sherdel Marcus-Isaacs in the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court had the matter dismissed on Monday after he offered to pay the victim $130,000 in open court.
The offence was reportedly committed on Monday March 3, last, in the man’s office at the Regional Democratic Office at Vryman’s Erven, New Amsterdam.
Chattergoon, who was the Region Six Cooperatives Officer allegedly, molested a number of women. He found himself in hot water after one of the women decided to report one of the incidents to the police.
The man would tell them that he is a big one with the Ministry of Home Affairs and was in a position to secure jobs for them as Neighbourhood Police Officers.
The man had lured the 35-year-old mother of five to his office after offering to find a job for her. She had told him that she was in desperate need of a job to take care of her children.
The man then invited the woman to his office. She reportedly told him that she might be unable to go because she does not have passage. He then gave her three hundred dollars. He told the unsuspecting female that his name was ‘Anil’ and that his office was at the Regional Democratic Council Building. She should go there and wait, even if he was not there.
In the office he indecently exposed himself to her and used racial slurs.
The woman expressed frustration that after the man was charged she was not assisted by any women’s group or other NGOs; that she was left alone to attend court and face the judicial system.
A number of persons expressed outrage at the conclusion of the matter and expressed the need for something more serious to be done.
Chattergoon was once implicated in the food poisoning scandal back in 2010, when close to 400 regular Police and Community and Neighbourhood Police officials suffered food poisoning at a retreat in Berbice. Chattergoon was the cook.
