it would be a magnificent day when prostitution is decriminalized worldwide. It is legal in some countries, or parts of some countries. And some enlightened authorities now designate them as "sex workers" officially. These women provide an important social service. Without them, rape statistics would have been extremely high.

Sex workers should enjoy equal human rights as other citizens, including the right to run for public office.

Its the same with church opposing abortions in developing countries. My religion does not approve abortions, but we see the reality in developing countries, when another mouth to feed is disaster for most poor families.

It seems hypocritical not to allow condoms, yet they don't approve of abortions, sometimes resulting in suicide.

Community activist to run for City Council seat

Winslow wants to take on Ruben Wills

To those in the community, she is known simply as CW, but activist Christina Winslow is now seeking a different title, that of city councilwoman for the 31st District, a seat occupied by Ruben Wills (D-Jamaica).

A single mother of four, Winslow, 43, has never run for political office before, but after being encouraged by community members to do so, she decided to go for it.

“People believe in what I’ve done,” Winslow said. “They know my heart is in it and that I’m a sincere person, so they believe I can do it.”

Winslow, of South Jamaica, is the founder and CEO of A Cause, A Concern, A Solution Network, a nonprofit organization that provides services to families and children in need. She is certified by the National Association of Forensic Counselors, according to her website. Winslow has been a member of the Sutphin Boulevard Civic Association, a foster parent with Little Flower for eight years and vice president of the Foch Boulevard Library Association.

She has come a long way, surviving a battle with substance abuse and spending a 30-day stint in jail for prostitution when she was 16. Winslow hopes her success in overcoming the obstacles in her life will serve as an inspiration to others, particularly youth.

“I want to encourage people,” Winslow said. “I was able to change my life with God’s help, and others can do it too.”

Although she didn’t want to speak ill of the incumbent, Wills, she did say she thought his predecessor, Tom White Jr., was a more effective lawmaker, and she hopes to implement some of his methods to bring much needed resources to the community.

“I just pray that people have the confidence to make me their leader,” Winslow said. “I want to be a voice for them.”

  • It seems that a "brush with the Law" is a certification in the South Queens community to be eligible to run for a political position or to be an elected leader!

You should be ashamed of yourself. I read the lady's bio and life has deal her some blows but it appears her present trajectory has all been for the good of her community. I hope she wins because her heart would be in the work. You need to sit back and take a moment for introspection and reflect on why you had to be a complete fool and not see past her infraction at 16 as a dope head to who she is now. It means you have more to learn to be calling yourself a leader. You are a bit of a chauvinistic pig.
