Four golds each at Nationals …Amy Grant Girls U-18 Champion, Daniel Scott Boys Open Champion

At this year’s 57th edition of the National Schools Cycling, Swimming and Track and Field Championship, the only two swimmers to emerge from the National Aquatic Pool, Liliendaal with a quartet of gold medals each were Amy Grant of St Roses High School and Daniel Scott of Chase Academy.

Both swimmers represented District 11, the winner of the Swimming Championship. Grant was rearing to go since she has not swam in any real competition since March. The first event was the Blue Ribbon event which is the 50m Freestyle.
Then came the 50m Butterfly which she won with a fast time for the short course event; in the 100m event Grant moved away in style and didn’t give her opponents any chances of catching her.
Everything was looking good as the time to close off the swimming championship approached with the 200m Freestyle Relay and District 11 having had most of the fastest sprinters. It was plain sailing as the other three girls did their best to hand Grant a lead to go home well in front of the other districts to take gold.
Thanks to Lian Winter, Teshanna Hunter and Accalia Khan; it made Grant the only girl at the 2017 National Schools Swimming Championship to achieve four gold medals. Grant also bagged the trophy for the Champion Girl of the 2017 U-18 category.
Two days later, Grant made it to the final eight of the 800m Girls U-18 at the Leonora Track & Field Facility. South American Junior medalist Joanna Archer of District 3 won the race and Grant came fifth.
On the boy’s side, young Daniel Scott was looking good as well with a quick win in the open 100m Backstroke followed by the 50m Butterfly. Scott has become a very strong swimmer this year.
In the 50m Backstroke, Scott was out very quickly and pressed on to take a lead on the turn to win easily to bag his third gold. Scott then swam in the 200m Freestyle relay to bring the curtain down on the 2017 National Schools Swimming Championship.
The 200m Freestyle was certain gold with his teammates Leon Seaton, Raekwon Noel and Alex Winter helping him to amass four gold’s and the title of “The only boy to win four gold medals at this year’s championship.” Scott also claimed the trophy for the Champion Boy of the 2017 Open category.
