Four Guyanese among eight pirates nabbed in neighbouring Suriname
Four Guyanese fishermen are among eight men nabbed in neighbouring Suriname following a report 
of piracy committed on a fishing boat on October 15, last. The act of piracy reportedly happened at the mouth of the Copenamme River in Suriname.
Whilst two of the men have given Suriname addresses, the other two have given addresses in Guyana.
The four Guyanese are Roopchand Sarwan, called ‘Vishal’, 26, of the District of Coronie in Suriname; Sewchan Mahadeo, called ‘Youth man’, 21, of Lot 38 Albion, Corentyne, Berbice; Prakash Bharat, 54, of Lot 44 Annandale, East Coast Demerara; and Roy Lalas, 33, also of Coronie.
The incident is alleged to have occurred around 20:00 hrs on October 15, at Plaats Waar Gepleegd, at the mouth of the Copename River in Suriname. The eight pirates are alleged to have attacked and robbed a fishing boat of one 60Hp outboard motor engine, one mobile telephone, one wrist watch and a quantity of fish, fish glue and other materials from the boat.
The boat, which was part of a fleet fishing in the river at the time, belongs to a Guyanese who is living in Suriname. The police have since recovered a shot gun and an outboard engine suspected to the stolen engine.
Following investigations, the eight men were arrested and taken into custody. They are charged with Piracy and robbery under arms, and are in custody awaiting trial in Suriname as investigations continue into the incident.
