The Guyana Amateur Boxing Association will close off hosting of statutory competitions for the year with the staging of the Terrence Alli National Open Tournament from October 29 to 31 at the National Gymnasium.

The Guyana Defence Force is the reigning champions but is expected to have a torrid time with the Republican Gym which would be, led by heavyweight Jason `AK47’ Barker. The drum beating Republicans rumbled, with some measure of success, with the army at the recently held Lennox Blackmoore National Novice

The GABA would also use the National Open to hold a take away lunch in order to raise funds to send a team to the Caribbean Championships in Barbados in December. The lunch is also being held to assist in paying debts incurred when Guyana staged the first Caribbean Development Tournament.

β€œYes we owe and that should not be a secret. We are indebted to some hotels for accommodation and meals, and the take away lunch is part and parcel of us attempting to alleviate that burden,” GABA president Steve Ninvalle said.

The Caribbean Development Tournament saw Anguilla, Antigua, Bahamas, Barbados, Dominica, French Guiana, Grenada, St. Maarten, Guadeloupe, Guyana, Jamaica, St Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago participating with the host country winning the hog’s share of medals.
The Terrence Alli National Open followed on the heels of the Pepsi/Michael Parris Under-16, the Andrew Lewis National Novice and the Lennox Blackmoore National Intermediate competitions.
