Gaskin Memorial Sports Programme, Ansa McAl Award of Excellence set for Friday

The Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club, MS, Awards Committee and its eight cricket teams on Friday would be hosting their 5th Annual Gregory Gaskin Memorial Berbice Sports Awards Programme at the St. Francis Community Developers Training Centre. The Club would also be hosting the Annual Ansa McAl Award of Excellence during the same event. Club Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster along with Speaker of the National Assembly Dr, Barton Scotland would be the main speakers.
The Awards to be shared out are Sportsmen and Sportswoman of the Year 2016, Sports Personality of the Year, Sports Organisation of the Year and Lifetime Achievement in Sports. The main objectives of the Gregory Gaskin Awards are to promote the importance of sports, to recognise and honour outstanding performance in sports during a calendar year, to identify positive role models for youths to emulate and to pay respect to the legacy of the late Gregory Gaskin, a strong supporter of sports. Each of the Awardees would receive a trophy, Medal, Certificate of Excellence and a collection of special gifts.
Five outstanding Berbicians with a combined total of almost 160 years of service would be honoured for their outstanding contributions to the development of Guyana under the Ansa Mcal Award of Excellence Programme. The Awards would be shared out under the Sub-headings of Health, Sports, Education, Culture and Community Development.
The 2017 Awardees are Catherine Archer â Education, Rhonda Trim â Community Development, Albert Smith â and Sports and Culture â Ruth Jaundoo. The Awardees would each receive special gifts, trophy, Medal and Framed Certificate.
Awardees for both programmes are selected by a panel of judges headed by veteran Television Editor Gregory Rambarran. Members of the General Public are encouraged to submit nominations to the Judging Panel. Strong emphasis was based on personal discipline and role model status.
The Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club, MS, during the two hours Ceremony would also be launching a Say No to Drugs/Suicide and Yes to Education Exercise books Programme in conjunction with the National Milling Company (Namilco). A total of 30 Secondary and Primary Schools from across Region 6 would receive exercise books for Grade 6 and Form one students. Each of the exercise books would have messages directed to youths on the Say No/Say Yes Campaign.
A total of 12,500 exercise books would be shared out and Foster disclosed that it would be the largest distribution by an NGO in Berbice. Managing Director of Namilco Bert Sukhai and Financial Controller Fitz McLeod are expected to be present for the historic presentation.
