GBA’s Terrence Ali Nat Open Boxing C/Ships …GDF retains title as Allicock adjudged Best Boxer

The Guyana Boxing Association’s (GBA) Terrence Ali National Open Boxing Championship climaxed early yesterday morning at the National Gymnasium with the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) retaining their title with Forgotten Youth Foundation’s (FYF) rising star Kevin Allicock being adjudged the Best Boxer in the three-night tournament as the club took the Runners-up position.
The largest turn out for the Event saw 18-year-old Allicock, a Caribbean Junior Gold Medallist and South American Silver Medallist in the Bantamweight division, face-off with GDF’s Clairmont Gibson in what was anticipated to be riveting affair and the fight lived up to the hype from the first bell.
Despite the urging from a raucous, drum beating GDF support group, Gibson was outclassed by the talented Albouystown resident but produced a spirited performance befitting of a Silver medallist as the fighters traded punches in the opening round in a high tempo battle.
Allicock pounded his opponent’s body with lightning fast and clinically executed upper cuts to the mid-section but Gibson counter punched and hit his opponent a few times, but Allicock skilfully danced out of range most of the time using the Ring to good effect. Little separated the Boxers at end of the first stanza.
When a 1-2 combination to head at the beginning of the second round stunned Allicock who was given a standing 8 count, the noise of the GDF fans and their drums could be heard all the way to Camp Stevenson in Timheri; creating an atmosphere that was absolutely fantastic.
Allicock retaliated with wicked shots to the body and connected with a hard right to the head followed up by blows to body and by the end of round 2 Gibson had been given two standing eight counts.
Gibson was hit with a left/ right combination which sent him to the canvas inside a minute into the final round at which time the Referee had seen enough punishment and called a halt to proceeding as Allicock became the new Bantamweight Champion of Guyana. Gibson was disqualified for exiting the ring prematurely.
The contest between Policeman Dewani Lampkin and GDF’s best Boxer Colin ‘Superman’ Lewis was highly anticipated but the taller Lewis had the faster hands and dished out a relentless attack on the Cop resulting in the fight being stopped 1.4 seconds in the second round.
In the lone female fight of the night, GDF’s Joann Williams was all over the taller Aleema Arokium of Rose Hall Jammers and after a straight right hurt the Berbician it was all over.
However, the lack of putting on her bandage resulted in Williams being disqualified but she showed far superior skill than her opponent and was later adjudged the best female Boxer.
Watched by a crowd which included former National pugilists Denny Dalton, Joseph Murray and Mike Parris, Christopher Moore took the ‘Best Youth Boxer’ Award, GDF Coach Terrence Pool took home the ‘best Coach’ Award, while Ramona Agard copped the Best Referee/Judge Award.
