GCB 3-day Franchise Cricket … Suknanan (7-37) spins out E/Coast for 148

After four sessions were lost, the second day of the third round game between Georgetown and East Coast started after Lunch in sweltering conditions at Bourda and when bails were lifted in fading light at 17:35hrs yesterday, Georgetown were 63-3 in reply to East Coast’s 148.

Twenty-three year old off-spinner Gajanand Suknanan spun webs around the East Coast batsmen on his way to a tournament best 7-37 from 12.3 overs as only Gavin Boodwah (40), Ramnarine Chetura (30) and Chanderpaul Hemraj (24) reached 15.

Georgetown who have already lost Robin Bacchus (18), Andrew Lyght Jr (25) and Ovid Richardson (4) end the truncated day with a deficit of 85 with two night watchmen at the crease. Devon Lord is on 14 and Suknanan on 4 and an interesting final day is anticipated when play is scheduled to commence at 09:00hrs.

Playing before a few vocal fans the home team, batting on a flat track and sluggish outfield where the boundary boards were pulled due to rain which washed out the entire opening day and the first session yesterday, began their reply with 70 minutes left in the day.

Robin Bacchus stroked left-arm seamer Gavin Moriah delightfully to the cover boundary while Lyght danced into Jermaine Martin and dumped him for six before the son of former West Indies ‘A’ team opener the late Andrew Lyght, clobbered Moriah for three consecutive boundaries.

Lyght played aggressively and reached the small boundary four times and cleared it once but he never suggested permanence and was LBW to off-spinner Vivian Albert who also removed Richardson nine runs later to leave GT on 45-2.

Bacchus flicked Martin for four but was soon dismissed by the burly Albert (2-12) at 50-3 before Suknanan and Lord survived to the end of the day.

Earlier, East Coast opted to bat and lost Baskhar Yadram (2) caught behind off Chris Barnwell but Boodwah pivoted on one leg and hooked him behind square for four before two more pulls raced across the heavy outfield for boundaries as the medium pacer seemed intent on testing the batsman with bouncers on a track with little help for the pacers.

Hemraj clipped Kellon Carmichael for four while Boodwah elegantly stroked Carmichael down the ground for another boundary and the 50 was posted in 61 minutes from 85 balls.

Hemraj deposited Renaldo Ali-Mohamed over cover for six before easing Suknanan past cover for four but with the partnership on 68, Boodwah, who batted for 75 minutes and struck five fours, was trapped LBW by Suknanan who also got rid of Hemraj, whose innings included three fours and a six from 61 minutes, five runs later as the East Coast, with two wins and a second placed spot in the League, were on 75-3.

Kavesh Yadram (5) edged Ali-Mohamed to the Keeper and Suknanan bowled Vishwanauth Ramlakhan (12) on the stroke of Tea with the score on 121-5.

First-Class leg spinner Amir Khan batted well in his unbeaten 14 but quickly ran out of partners.

Left-arm spinner Devon Lord bowled Chetura after he had dumped him into the Rohan Kanhai Stand to end his attractive innings which was decorated with three fours and a six and lasted 30 minutes.

Suknanan plucked out the last four batsmen as the last five wickets tumbled for just 15 runs as Suknanan, who ironically hails from the East Coast and is one of the better off-spinners in the League, eclipsed the previous best figures of 7-62 achieved in the last round by East Bank’s Ershad Ali against West Demerara at Everest.
